Today we’d like to introduce you to Tenille Johnson.
Tenille, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Writing has always been one of my passions. I started as a songwriter, writing music for other artists. I had the pleasure of meeting and working alongside so many amazing people. As my career was just really taking off, my mother was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that rendered her unable to digest food or care for herself. I dropped everything and became her caregiver. Thankfully, we got to spend her last years together. After a long and very difficult fight, my mother received her wings in 2016. Later that year, I gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby girl, only a few minutes shy of my mother’s birthday. Becoming a mother in the midst of experiencing the greatest loss of my life, sparked my interest in reviving an abandoned blog of mine. I wanted to share my experiences in a way that was therapeutic for me and also helped me to build connections with other people who were experiencing any of what I was experiencing at the time. That blossomed into the Feel My Hustle blog and the @puremomblog Instagram page that I use to share the daily happenings of life with a now toddler, our adventures, as well as recipes, products and services that may be useful to other moms, and more.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to where I am today has not been an easy one. I experienced depression, postpartum challenges, uncertainty surrounding career shifts, and am still navigating grief and motherhood simultaneously. My advice to other women is to take time to develop you, be gentle with yourself, listen to your body, incorporate self-care, and never hesitate to reach out for help when you need it ( from professionals, friends, or family). If you’re new to the blogging world, or any field really, there’s still room at the table. Each of us brings a different perspective, skill set, and unique experiences that make our contribution valuable. As cliche as it sounds, believe in yourself. Put together a plan. Re-evaluate the plan as you need to. Work on eliminating distractions and focus on taking each of the small steps that will get you closer to your larger goal, and Start Now!
Tell us about Puremomblog – what should we know?
As a mom blogger on Feelmyhustle.com, I write about experiences, events, products and services beneficial to parents and their children. I manage a social media page on Instagram @puremomblog where I highlight my daughter Aven Pure and our adventures, funny moments, her vegan lifestyle, and initiate dialogue around topics specific to motherhood and topics applicable to life in general. I am most proud that by finding and learning photography as a new passion and combining it with my love for writing, I’ve been able to share my journey in motherhood and create a stream of income that allows me to be with my daughter full time. I’m also proud that my work has allowed me to partner with some amazing brands and simultaneously build my own.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
My mother has been my greatest inspiration. She was a single, extremely hard-working mother of two, who knew the importance of education, exposure to the arts and other enriching experiences, and provided them for her children. With a background in music as a pianist and a profound love for literature, my mother definitely influenced my own love for music and writing, which led me to songwriting and blogging as well. From my mother Neva, I learned the art of sacrifice, discipline, determination, follow through, acceptance of constructive critique and much more. Watching her battle cancer with poise, I was inspired by her faith, her love for her children, and her strength. Who she was made a major impact on who I am today, and I know she’s with me in spirit, inspiring so much of what I do, how I think and how I mother my own daughter.
