Today we’d like to introduce you to Thuy Doan.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I discovered my passion after undergoing botched injection procedures by 2 injectors, which had left me with filler I did not need and chipmunk cheeks. I initially came in for dark undereye issues which were really due to hyperpigmentation and not true hollowing – which I didn’t know at the time. I wasn’t trained in aesthetics at the time so I was going off of what the “professionals” told me. After my first experience being a complete flop, I went for a second opinion, their answer was to inject me again with more filler, which meant me paying them more money. As a naive consumer, I, of course, listened to them because I thought that was what I needed. Keep in mind I was new to aesthetics and so I trusted them.
Devastated and feeling more botched and not like myself I fell into a deep depression. I believed that the more injections I did, because of their recommendations, would fix my problem, but it made it worse. The answer was really to REVERSE ALL OF IT! Sadly, no one told me that there was a solution. If I knew there was a reversal agent then that would mean more time spent on me and no money for them. Luckily I figured that out myself. So, that’s what I did on myself for over six months. I slowly started reversing myself. Each time I reversed, I started to feel like myself again and gaining my self-confidence back.
People seek out professionals to help them feel more confident and also enhance their features not to completely change it so drastically. Unfortunately, this is what many people go through and have to suffer from the negative self stigmatization it brings. The only thing I’m grateful for with this botched experience is that it allowed me to discover my passion and that I’m pretty talented at facial injections. It also has helped me be very adamant with my approach because at the end of the day if I can help prevent others from encountering the same type of internalized stigma that I endured I did my job and did it well.
Where I’m at today?
In May of 2019, I opened Bespoke Aesthetics and Concierge Medicine which is located in Old Fourth Ward, Atlanta next to the Beltline. I’m proud to say that I am the owner and founder of a thriving boutique-style Medical Spa practice that is consistently booked out 3 months in advance. My Medical Aesthetician, Saira Bakhsh, who is the owner of Theory Aesthetics shares the space with me and provides the best-advanced skincare services alongside me. We share a passion for similar aesthetics treatments and practices and we are just like consumers too and very selective. We also know that not every client is for us. Oftentimes, I have to decline clients more than I will take them because of my philosophy of less is more.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am a Physician Injector. I specialize in Botox and Dermal Filler injections. I am known for my Global Facial Approach to restore and balance facial features through harmonization. I analyze and assess the face in a systematic 3D approach by making sure your upper, middle, and lower face is harmonized. I restore facial features before I do any volumization which is key. I accentuate the client’s beauty versus making one feature overpowering. I practice my philosophy of less is more.
My training started after my botched experience where I worked for an ENT and a dermatologist as an apprentice for almost one year. I then went on to do advanced aesthetics training in London. Upon my return from London, I worked in various medspas in Buckhead Atlanta where I quickly found out that working for someone else wasn’t for me. I was not able to practice my belief of “less is more” and I wasn’t truly able to practice my artistry. I was only there to inject. This was the turning point for me when I knew that I had to have my own Medical Spa practice.
Any advice for other women who are starting their journey?
My advice if you are interested in aesthetics is to become an apprentice. This is where you will learn your basic training. Shadow different providers since we all practice slightly different. Attend conferences because it will make you more valuable and will help you to attain practical tools for your business. Knowing how to do a thorough consultation is key to converting a consultation to a booked client. Understanding the science behind injections. Understanding how to treat complications as they arise. Keep the client’s best interest at heart. Sometimes up-sale is no sale.
