Today we’d like to introduce you to Travis Starr.
Travis, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in a house full of music. My dads black and my moms white so I grew up listening to everything from Led Zeppelin to Michael Jackson. When I graduated high school, like everyone else, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. One day while at a friends house who later became producer Mike Will Made It, I asked him if there was money in owning a recording studio. He told me “Hell ya if you know what you’re doing.” I immediately started buying studio equipment. Once I opened the studio, I started managing artists. I never could find an artist who could match my work ethic so it ended up being very short-lived. After having zero success with artists, my brother told me to just do it myself and that’s what I did. One day after drinking a bottle of 1800 Tequila, I got enough courage to get behind the mic. The first record I recorded was called “Alone.” I put it out on SoundCloud and by the next day, I had so many comments and DMs with so much good feedback. I knew I had something then.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been an extremely rough road. When I was 12 years old, my 19-year-old sister committed suicide in my house. This devastated my parents. The following years, my cousin and a couple of other relatives died as well. I stopped caring about school and much of everything else after that. By 14, I began getting in trouble and going to jail. Between 14 and 25, I was arrested multiple times. Opening the studio was hard work but it kept me occupied and out of jail.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Right now I’m focusing on finishing my first album and getting it ready for everyone to hear it. I’m most proud of my ability to be myself in my music and still be so accepted by so many people who listen.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is being able to live life and do what you want, where you want, when you want.
