Today we’d like to introduce you to Trisha Laughery.
Trisha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Started Mot’s BBQ with a partner in 1996. Operated it together till I bought him out in 2007. I have operated the six days a week restaurant solo since then. I married in 2002 to my awesome husband James. I was lucky enough to do some work for Bulls Eye Events (Indianapolis) during masters which allowed me to grow my upper end skill set.
Then in 2018, I had a massive heart attack from out of the blue. At that time, I decided to throw it out to the universe and see what happened. My daughters have taken over a lot of the daily operations at Mot’s so I went for it. Advances in my culinary skill set opened opportunities through BEE and I was selected to become part of their traveling hospitality team under food network celebrity chef Aaron May. Working with BEE I have traveled to Indianapolis, Detroit and Atlanta. In Atlanta, I was one of 18 chefs from around the country that provided hospitality for a Super Bowl pregame tailgate party. This event I was able to work under both Chef Guy Fieri and Chef Aaron May with 5 star chefs such as Micheal Voltaggio and Thiago Silva to name two. I just yesterday got notice I have made the team for Super Bowl 2020 and will be heading to Miami to join a slew of other chefs for the party again this year. I have expanded our catering services and in 2019 started a DBA business as Chef Trish from Augusta. Chef Trish from Augusta is how I am introduced as I travel and I have embraced the name. Chef Trish from Augusta when you want the best!
Has it been a smooth road?
As mentioned before, I had a partner for the beginning of this business, the part I left out was he was my fiance’. The buyout came after years of bickering and trying to outlast the other. I have been open almost 24 years- through wars, up economy, down economy, September 11 was I believe the hardest as a small business. After three stints, my health is good and I am strong as ever.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Mot’s BBQ is a BBQ mainstay in Augusta, Georgia. We hand clean, chop and serve to order in a quick service casual BBQ joint. We have been blessed to provide BBQ and home cooked fixings for the CSRA since ’96… “Consistent quality, fair pricing, friendly service in a clean environment “has been our motto since opening and we boast a 99 average health department score (current score is 100). My motto reinventing myself in my 50’s “it’s not too late & I’m not too old!”
Chef Trish from Augusta was born in 2019 after expanding our Mot’s catering services as far as they could go with BBQ in your name. It became evident I was not being asked to bid on the upper end caterings. What sets me apart is…well in a word me. I am almost 6 foot tall & boisterous. I have crazy hair you NEVER know what colors or styles I might be rocking- and I care about each and every event. Any event I cannot personally go to will be hosted by either my husband or one of my two adult daughters.
My team experiences in putting together these large elaborate menus makes any bridezilla look like a pussycat. The pressure of a food network chef screaming at you makes everything else seem small. I love to work with folks no matter their budget and can realize any vision where the budget allows.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Atlanta is a wonderful city with so many opportunities!
