Today we’d like to introduce you to Tristin Travis.
Tristin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
One year ago, I sat in my best friends living room and said “Things are about to change.
I’m going to be a Creative Director!” she smirked at me as I wrote it down in huge letters in my what is now my director’s book. Maybe a week later, I walked right on set my first music video as a set designer.
I continued to work at my craft and realized that in order to eventually be where I wanted I would need a solid portfolio. My goal was to build a portfolio during my first year, and that’s what has happened. Throughout this year, I’ve worked with some of the biggest names in entertainment from Mase to Waka Flaka. Drake, Migos, Jaquees, Money Bag yo, to name a few.
I’ve created unique and timeless content for upcoming artists as well who will have my photography for a lifetime to show for their talents. At this point, I’m just starting my journey, and I have plans to change the world can’t fail if you do the work.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not, I’ve been turned away a couple of times and ignored by contacts that I thought were my friends. The hardest thing is being an entrepreneur in entertainment because you really have to believe in yourself.
No one owes you anything, not an explanation of why we can’t work together, not a “tag” on a picture or video and not a courtesy phone call letting you know they can’t come to your event.
All these things make for a small portion of the production process, and all make a major difference even if just for your mental. I stay in my lane and don’t expect anything from anyone along my journey. I focus extremely hard I’ve gone to the library a few times to edit and work on treatments.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Unicorn Travie – what should we know?
I go by Unicorn Travie. My brand is my company. I’m a Creative Director and I different mediums to express myself. I specialize in treatments, set design, directing videos, short films and documentaries. I also plan and create content for artist performances including festivals, concerts, and print.
Additionally, I execute events around artists, brands and have my own online collection called The Nude Apparel. Nude in this context meaning truth which makes for fun meetings with the team.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I’ve always made a point in my life to have mentors. At 17, I started my first internship at Radio One in Atlanta. This opportunity helped pave the way for my interests in the entertainment industry.
I learned about promotions, sales, production, and overall artist relations. I took what I learned in radio and ran with it to create content for some of the biggest artists out. I still talk to my radio one family and mentors regularly, and they constantly send me new opportunities to grow.
Additionally, I’d like to acknowledge my professors in college as they helped set the tone for my discipline and overall process when it comes to maintaining healthy business relationships.
