Meet Truitt Taylor of Taylor Construction + Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Truitt Taylor.

Hi Truitt, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Taylor Construction + Design began as Taylor Design Shop in 2017 after I felt called to leave my job in corporate education. I started in my 400 sq ft garage with no tools and as a woodworking hobby for me. In October of 2019, I hired my first employee. A year later, we moved into a 1400 sq ft warehouse and began making custom furniture, custom cabinetry, and then transitioned into renovations.

Our strong attention to detail led to our first kitchen renovation in 2019 which was completed in five days! The team’s skills of woodworking and design went into focusing on renovations. In 2021, we moved into a 3,000 sq ft shop and the team grew to five full-time employees. We currently work with mid to high-end renovations ranging from $50k – $500k.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Of course, there are always obstacles when starting a new business. You’re constantly learning on the fly and making adjustments to your environment. Some of our biggest challenges have been the increase in demand within our industry, the supply chain crisis, and Covid precautions.

One of my biggest personal challenges has been compartmentalizing the numerous responsibilities of an entrepreneur and small business owner. Finding balance is extremely important and has been a key focus for me.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Taylor Construction + Design is a build/design firm specializing in residential renovations. Our approach is to establish a personal relationship, create a tailored design, and display superior craftsmanship. We blend renovation with relationships and get into a “Renovationship” with our clients. We are proud of the connection we cultivate with our clients and enjoy getting to know them as people, not just working on their projects.

I would say we’re known for and proud of the camaraderie within our team. Many clients and peers have mentioned how much fun we have and how uniform we look. Everyone on our team comes in with a positive attitude and truly enjoys working with one another!

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in a lower middle class family, my dad was an electrician and my mom was a homemaker. I was into competitive sports such as baseball and martial arts. I remember helping my dad on the weekends with electrical work, watching my mother and grandmother as caregivers, and playing outside with my friends. In middle school, I was involved in groups that would do community service. I remember always wanting to help others and care for others which I did through my groups, cutting grass for neighbors, bringing neighbors food, and helping in any way I could.
