Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyhesha Connell.
Tyhesha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
At the age of 10 my love for cooking began to grow. I enjoyed making small dishes for my friends and having them taste test and give me feedback. In college I cooked for all my friends and would have parties just so everyone can try my cooking. Cooking is my passion. I’m allowed to express how I feel and show love through my meals. After I graduated from college with a degree in psychology, I wanted to find ways to combine my love for cooking with my love for mental health. That’s when I created my catering business Ty’s Tasty Plates.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road I’m still hitting some bumps but I’m overcoming. As a business owner you realize you do a lot on your own and at times it can be exhausting but at the same time fulfilling because you are doing what you love. Some of my struggles are not only having to carry the work alone but also getting discouraged when you want to be at a certain level in your business, but you must work hard to get there.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Ty’s Tasty Plates – what should we know?
Ty’s Tasty Plates isn’t only about food, it’s about catering to the customers mind, body and soul. Having them feel my food is filled with love and passion. I specialize in all types of cooking. I can do it all and if I can’t, I will learn but soul food and desserts have been what most people love from my business. What I’m mostly proud of is how I treat my customers. I make them feel like family and try to really capture what they want for their events. What sets me apart is I’m not just trying to make money from the customers but make connections and feed their souls and hearts, so they feel happy and have an experience.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My family, friends and coworkers always push me to do better and have always told me I should do more with my cooking. I would bring food to work and my coworkers would tell me” girl you need to do this full-time why are working here” it would crack me up because I still liked working my 9-5. Everyone played a meaningful role in inspiring me to build my business and continue cooking.
