Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Askew.
Tyler, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
How this all started is quite a story in itself. I remember December 22nd, 2017. I was driving back to Georgia all the way from Missouri after I was just recently terminated as a graduate assistant at Missouri Western State. I was coaching sprints and horizontal jumps for the track and field program. Circumstances were unfair in my opinion but that’s life sometimes we have to overcome. I will say that last month in Missouri was probably the most traumatizing time of my life; low energy, bad vibe, no sleep, anxiety, strong fears, etc., etc., but it lit a fire underneath me that still burns up to this day. I vividly remember a phone conversation with one of my close friends in December 17′ and I told her, “I’m unsure what’s next for me, but I faithfully believe that I will bounce back harder than ever when I return home!” While at MWSU, I studied Sports and Fitness Management and grew a strong passion for the management side of sports-related business and I knew that would be my priority when arriving back home. I decided to visit a local gym in Conyers about two weeks after being home and gracefully enough, they needed help immediately. I jumped on board and started training athletes due to my experienced sports background. Few weeks later, a friend of mine, Lauren Izegbu, contacted me and notified me that she desired personal training. I had no prior experience in Fitness besides the basics I learned in school athletics. I was quite nervous to take on the challenge considering her desired goals but I gracefully accepted the challenge and we indeed made progress instantly. From that point, clientele picked up for both athletics and fitness and I use Instagram to grow my brand even more. Fast forward, two years later, God’s grace and mercy has blessed me with a new gym and a loyal clientele that I appreciate so dearly and I never forget a moment to let them know.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s hard to say the road to success was smooth, I’ve definitely had my share of hiccups along the road, however it’s been very rewarding and fulfilling. Things can change abruptly in life as we know, the coronavirus has affected every being in this nation. In comparison, being an independent contractor in this business can be challenging at times because rules and policies may change and you have to abide regardless of what you think and how you feel. How you adapt reveals certain qualities that you need to be successful in this field. Social media can be an adjustment also. Considering we are walking inspirations to others, you feel that added pressure of doing things right, saying the right things, providing the right content; it can overwhelming at times but again, those tasks reveal certain qualities of self and push you to do more and more and more for others. The more you model to others, the more they allow you to mentor. I appreciate my following to allow my light to shine and I hope to continue to be an inspiration through the good and the bad. As I mentioned earlier, I’m probably facing my toughest obstacle thus far considering I opened a gym during this “Coronavirus” pandemic. It is quite unfortunate but I look forward to the challenging of overcoming and prevailing through this tribulation. My faith is stronger than most and I’m overly faithful that we will get through this with the grace and mercy of God! Faith over fear!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Faithful Sports & Fitness – what should we know?
I am the owner/founder of Faithful Sports & Fitness, a sports and fitness instruction company based in Conyers, GA. I’ve worked in the Conyers, GA area as an independent contractor for the past two years but God has now blessed me with my own gym, address 1105 West Avenue SW (Suite H), Conyers, GA 30012. We specialize in Fitness training, such as weight loss, body sculpting, body toning, small group and boot-camp training. We also specialize in athletic training, such as athlete development, speed and agility training, sports specific training using different training methods such as resistance training, isometric training, plyometric training, etc.. I also conduct a signature class called the “FaithfulFit” Experience which is a lower body based workout designed to fit all fitness levels for both men and women of ALL ages. The Experience is designed to attack your legs, glutes and midsection while providing a cardiovascular vibe to the workout. We participate in hip hop exercise routines, circuit training, resistance band usage, etc. The class is very effective and brings forth very high energy each and every time! I’d rather others speak on what makes my company different but if I’d say so myself, my energy is unmatched and I fell in love with the impact, not the income. God will take care of me, but I believe he made it my purpose to take care of his people. People feel that they sense that, and that makes the relationships within my business so strong, My people love me and I love my people, simply stated.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
First and foremost, I give my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ all the glory, honor, and praise! He provided my purpose, I’m simply fulfilling my duties. Furthermore, my moms and my pops deserve a lot of credit in this. They believed my vision and never second guessed me. I had to move out of my apartment back into moms’ house to save up for my gym in September 2019, moms accepted me with open arms. My pops helped invest in my gym, and he told me from day 1, he was all in regardless if nobody else was. Two of my closet friends Briana Jagayle and Vanita Shanice. I personally want to say thank you. Without either of them, none of this was possible. Love y’all dearly! My head coach from college, Lonnie Greene, which is now University of Kentucky head coach. The day I met him, I said to myself, “I want to be like him,” and everyday I feel like I’m walking in his footsteps and making him proud. I appreciate Thea and Ivory Dennard for the opportunity provided when no other doors were open. Thank you to my friend and first client, Lauren Izegbu for entrusting me with no prior experience. It’s so many people I can thank but truly I thank everyone for helping me reach this point. As they say, “it takes a village,” and I owe so much appreciation to many. Thank you all!
