Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Hendon.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Tyler. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up humbly on the west side of Detroit, Michigan. At the time, I didn’t realize it, but I was very fortunate to have been raised by hardworking, responsible people. I’m very thankful for the environment I was raised in and for my family for setting the foundation for where I am today.
As a teenager, I was a pretty hardheaded. I didn’t take academics seriously in any way, shape or form. I squeezed by year over year, with little thought to my future. That attitude ultimately led to me only applying to a few colleges and being denied admission into Michigan State University. I was heartbroken! Luckily, I was able to attend MSU based off of relationships that I had. While in undergrad, I was able to apply myself in school and become very involved on campus. Those experiences prepared me for where I am today; they prepared me to become a business leader and entrepreneur.
For roughly four years, I worked for a Fortune 10 company as an HR Business Partner. I really enjoyed my job but I wanted to do more with my time and energy. I wanted to face new challenges and operate in foreign spaces. It wasn’t until I left that company in late 2018 that I really took the time and energy to move forward with my business.
There was a part of me that felt that maybe leaving my job isn’t the right step for me to be successful, but now I believe that God pushed me in this direction to challenge me and force me outside of my comfort zone. It feels very special for me to be where I am today. The downs have served as vital life lessons! While the ups have been some of the sweetest moments of my life. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No! With a capital N. I’ve dealt with plenty of challenges, including some very tough ones within the past year. I had to figure out exactly what I wanted to do with my business. I asked myself “What are you really trying to achieve?” What’s your brand going to be?” “What need am I filling that isn’t already being filled?” These were tough questions for me, but the right questions for me to progress in my career.
The entrepreneur life has come with some struggles, but the GOOD kind of struggles. I think the discomfort forced me to hustle harder than I have in the past.
When things got tough, I had to grow up a bit. I was exposed to myself in a great way. Overall, I’ve learned a lot about myself through the hard times. I’m thankful that I’ve been able to make relationships with really good people that have been able to give me direction and feedback regarding my business. I’m also thankful for the success I’m experiencing today as it serves as a constant reminder to the sacrifices I made and trials I endured to get here.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Hendon Consulting Services story. Tell us more about the business.
Hendon Consulting Services is a business consulting company that is focused on the growth and success of small businesses, entrepreneurs, and start-up companies. I work with business owners to figure out what are some different things they can do from a day-to-day operations perspective and I also take time to figure out what are their long-term plans. I ask questions that allow me to figure out what they are looking to achieve one year, three years and five years down the line. Soon after, I take time to think about how my skill set and expertise can be influential within their business. I work to ensure I’m using my time and talent wisely as I want my customers to benefit greatly from working with me.
What sets me apart from other consulting companies? I believe my data-driven and customer service based approach to consulting is the biggest factor. I work to dig into hard numbers as often as possible. This data allows me to be honest and realistic with my clients as a coach and strategic partner. I also work to ensure I am available to my clients as often as possible. I often take calls on late nights and weekends. One of my favorite entrepreneurs, Kareem “Biggs” Burke, said, “The hustle includes the weekend.” I try to keep this in mind when it comes to Hendon Consulting Services.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I think that success looks different for everyone. I truly believe that success is really about getting to where you want to be in life and achieving your personal goals. Often times, we associate success with having a lot of money or being a recognizable face. Those things are cool! But success for me revolves around being who I want to be and doing things my way. I think that people can be successful in nine to five jobs. If that’s what makes them happy and fulfilled, then they are successful in my book. Success is really dictated by who you choose to be and the direction you want your life to go in.
