Meet Rev. Rico Miller of Universal Technical Services in Downtown Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rev. Rico Miller.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a child, I remember always having big dreams. As I grew older, I realized that my dreams were starting to become more and more fearful in my mind. As I grew older, I was starting to align my dreams with my current circumstances. I didn’t have a lot of money so that would limit my capacity to think I could become wealthy. However, my father would always encourage me to do the things that I have always wanted to do. Considering the fact that he was conservative in nature and had an extremely successful career, it was shocking to hear him encourage me to live life in a limitless thought process. He was perpetuating a fearless mindset that didn’t fear walls.

When I graduated from high school. I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps because I wasn’t ready for college. After boot camp, I realized that life for me was all about what I could make of it. I returned home from boot camp and attended college and started my career. My career blossomed and I held various positions in management for some of the world’s leading corporations.

After overcoming various challenges in life, I still felt like God had something greater for me that I was not achieving. I was on a quest for my purpose. I didn’t know what I wanted out of life but I was in some respects successful. My dreams were now scaring me because they seemed so far fetched. The things that God was showing me was something only God could help me accomplish. Therefore. I began to embrace my faith and apply God’s word to my life. I began to start businesses and became a successful entrepreneur. The more successful I became, the more I depended on God. I soon realized that the dreams and visions God shows you are supposed to scare you in order to allow us the opportunity to rely on our faith.

One of my favorite quotes by Carl Jung states that “As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light of meaning in the darkness of mere being. Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart … He who looks outside, dreams. He who looks inside awakens. The dream is the small hidden door in the deepest and most intimate sanctum of the soul”. I think God grants each of us with unique and powerful talents that are waiting to be activated.

Has it been a smooth road?
Langston Hughes wrote, “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair”. This quote spoke to me in so many ways. Through the various obstacles and challenges in life, my faith in God has always been with me through my darkest moments. This has remained true even when I haven’t always made the right choices in life or have even been the “poster child” for deductive reasoning. God has always walked with me and saved me from myself in many aspects, which is the reason why I’m still here today.

Having dealt with various challenges such as divorce, business struggles, church hurt, and reversing destructive generational patterns, throughout the years, I have learned to realize that there will be times in life where you have to encourage yourself.

As I later got thoroughly immersed in ministry, I learned that God gives you a different set of lenses to view obstacles and challenges. The Chinese word used for Obstacles (Jīyù yǔ wéijī) is the same word used for Opportunities. The way I view life with God now is that every obstacle is an opportunity for God to step in and make the impossible possible.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Universal Technical Services story. Tell us more about your work.
I wear dual hats in my day to day life. I am a Minister, CEO, Author philanthropist. In ministry, I serve as the Lead Pastor of Rico Miller Ministries and as an associate minister at Mount Welcome Missionary Baptist Church. I recently released my new book entitled”Undo Ordinary: Keys To Unlocking Your Purpose.”

I am the President and CEO of Universal Techncial Services Inc (UTS) that was established in 2000. UTS is an IT Staff Augmentation company that provides resources for companies for IT solutions. My company provides solutions for software, strategic designs, application roadmaps, Project Management, etc. for clients worldwide. We assist customers in driving business transformation by taking the road to Agile delivery. Building and bridging the gaps through enterprise-level automation, faster speed to market with the power of Robotic Automation, Machine Learning, IoT, Real-time analytics and Cloud Adoption.

The thing that makes ministry and being a CEO unique is that UTS and Rico Miller Ministries takes part of their revenue and give back to STEM initiatives throughout the city of Atlanta. My company partners with organizations and schools across the state to provide opportunities in the STEM arena to schools and students that may not have exposure to certain programs. We have helped several organizations create sustainable STEM programs and we have provided opportunities to over 500 students directly through the various initiatives. We provide scholarships and mentorship programs for young men and women that provide the essential tools to be successful in life.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Because I am committed to public service and making an impact on my local communities, within the next 5 to 10 years, I envision launching a mega ministry of thousands of people with several locations. Because ministry encompasses serving people from every walk of like, this congregation that may or may not be within four walls. I see the concentration ministry focusing on the restoration of families, young adults, and powerful youth ministry to reach the next generation.

The youth are the future of the world and ministry. Jesus talks about how we handle his children is very important to him. I envision ministry without walls or borders. My book talks about “Undoing the Ordinary”, and I believe it’s important to evolve and change the traditions that have kept us stagnant which will allow lives to be transformed. Therefore, we have to be intentional about ministry and consistent in the approach. My commitment to God is to serve and love people in business and in ministry. My focus in ministry is not to get more people in the church but to put more church into people.
