Today we’d like to introduce you to Varian May.
Varian, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Back in 2012 one of my partners Stephen and I were in the gym working out per our usual and as we were working out, we bouncing ideas off of one another on how we could start our own business. The first idea we came up with was to enroll into real estate school so we tried it out and after about two months we said this just isn’t for us so we stopped the curriculum and went back to our normal routine of going to our 9-5 and meeting at the gym for hours after work and brainstorming. One day it hit me; we both love to workout and when we were doing our thing people would always ask us for help so I said let’s get our personal training certification and start training. We both had a heart for people and we were very knowledgeable about exercise and nutrition, so we did just that and started the brand Tailord Fitness. We started out at George Ward Park with about 15 clients comprised of family and friends and eventually he circled back to real estate school and is now one of the best in the city and I have gone on to grow the business form George Ward Park to now as of October 2018 co-owning a brick and mortar gym(Proactive Athletic and Fitness Facility) here in Birmingham, AL.
Since 2012 I have had the opportunity to work with hundreds of people throughout the community and online, celebrities, professional NBA and NFL athletes, I’ve also held contracts with organizations such as Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama, Railroad Park, City of Birmingham, and Faith Chapel Christian Church, just to name a few. I think the style of training that I’ve adopted over the years which is HIIT or High Intensity Interval Training is a big reason people enjoy working with me because in a short window I aim to get every ounce of energy out of them and even at rest for the next 24-48 hours you’re still burning calories. I also like to empower my clients by telling them what they can do while correcting them in a caring way. Some trainers attempt to do the opposite and while it may work for them, I choose to give more pats on the back as I preach progress not perfection and over time, the results have been indicative of the effectiveness of this method.
The journey has not been easy by any means, but without struggle there can be no progress. I would encourage anyone who has a dream to actively pursue it. If it seems like it is too big for you to do alone then you know it was Him who gave it to you and I honestly believe that dreams are God’s permission slips to pursue purpose. If He allowed you to dream it then He has already equipped and empowered you to have it! Also, start where you’re at with what you have. I see too many people with some amazing ideas that feel like because they may not have everything they think they need at the moment they just don’t do it at all and the dream dies when someone somewhere was depending on that exact service to better their life.
From bootcamps, personal training, athletic training, corporate fitness, meal plans, etc. I would love to help you meet your goals whether through my online training or if you’re in the Birmingham area and want to come by my gym either way, I am here and as I always say “Results begin when YOU do”.
Has it been a smooth road?
Balance I would have to say has been one of my biggest struggles. Being a husband and Father which is my first priority, working for the Federal Government, and owning a gym is tough and requires every once of my time.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Tailord Fitness – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am a faith-based Fitness Trainer who specializes in High Intensity Interval Training which is a style that I have perfected over the years. I am most known for my high energy bootcamp classes which I’ve had as many as 150 people per class at a time and my ability to reach each person as if they are in a personal training session.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love everything about Birmingham and it is growing rapidly. I think I enjoy the diversity of restaurants here especially the “Soul food”, however although we are increasing our awareness of the importance of health and wellness, I would definitely say that is what I like the least, but I intend to continue doing my part to rewrite that narrative.
