Today we’d like to introduce you to Victor Thomas.
Victor, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Well, I and my family have always been big on music. My pops is a singer, plays saxophone and piano. My mother grew up singing in the church, so I was always around something involving music. I started off playing drums, and when I got to middle school, I then starting playing saxophone in the band, which I am very appreciative of today because it trained my ear to hear every little thing. While in-band, I also took piano lessons at the Dominy School of Arts, so reading music became second hand. Having recitals that helped me deal with stage anxiety (even though I would still be nervous like you wouldn’t believe), helped mold me into the musician I am today! I continued playing these instruments in highschool, practicing my craft as much as I could.
When I got to college, around my sophomore year, I got into making beats and writing lyrics. I was determined to expand beyond what I had learned in high school and incorporate that into what I was doing on the computer. I and my friend decided to start working on a project in which we completed after a good amount of late nights of practicing and finding a flow that fit our style. Also, being on a college campus made it easy to network and find studios to record in when we could, which was very helpful. At that time, we didn’t have much money, so it was difficult to actually invest in a studio for ourselves. I would continue to work on music throughout the years, but there was something always missing MY OWN STUDIO! So recently, I sat down and wrote out a plan to invest in a full studio so that I could record at any time. I just finished a project entitled “Supa EP,” which is my first solo project, and I have released a couple of singles after that as well. My next step is to do more showcases for people to hear and see as well. I want to make music to help people get away and clear their minds from whatever is going on at that point in time. Artists that I have looked up to have been ones such Fatmankey, Curtis Williams, Vince Staples, and Madeintokyo. Some producers that I study are Kenny Beats and Chasethemoney, Today, I’m working on perfecting my craft and spreading my style throughout Atlanta for others to hear!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’d say the hard part is honestly networking, only because Atlanta is such a big city and there are so many people here. You can do so much here! I know I want to network with everyone that I can! But that’s just something that takes time and patience. But for the most part, I have always had a good support system. My parents always had my back spiritually and emotionally. Good supportive friends around as well, of course, there have been bumps in the road, but nothing that I couldn’t overcome!
Supa – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Other than music, I have my own apparel business as well called “Supa Apparel” I recently just started it all up. Also, I have two clothing lines: Supa Clothing and Tuff Living Clothing (started in college). I expanded to apparel because I invested in all the equipment for not only my clothing but for items that people would need for special occasions/events as well, such as schools, churches, small organizations, family reunions, local businesses, etc. Music and making clothes have always been the two things I have loved doing, clothing helped me expand to different people on my college campus, and the same with my music! I’m very proud of how I took the initiative and made things happen for myself. What sets me apart from others is that I’m edgy, I’m willing to step outside the box with an idea and turn it into something that will open peoples eyes just a tad more! I’m willing to do the tedious work that everyone hates! I feel it’s a part of the journey and it’s going to be what catapults me into that next level of artistry, creativeness, and expansion.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moments (picking one is hard) of my career so far have been conducting my own pop-up shop, putting out my first solo EP, expanding my work to the community,& making my investments!!
