Meet Victoria James

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria James.

Hi Victoria, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have been writing ever since I was a little girl. I can remember writing my parents poetry and slipping it under their door when I wanted to butter them up. I entered some competitions in school and placed and I realized then I had a real talent for it. I decided to publish my first story when I was 23 years old. It took me a minute to decide what I wanted to talk about and who I wanted my audience to be. When I had my first kid, it became clear that I wanted to focus on the youth. They are so impressionable and so I thought, how could I help? I wanted to talk about issues that aren’t so easy to tackle and navigate on their own. I love telling stories but more than that I love to inspire and motivate.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t always been easy; I think the biggest hurdle for me was learning how to cheer for myself. It’s so easy to get caught up in wondering why you don’t have all the support, yet you go out of your way to support others. Once I realized that the key was believing in myself and understanding that my work was bigger than me, I was just fine. If I can help one person at the end of the day, it’s a win.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Children’s author and a Chef. I’ve always been the writer and the dreamer. I’ve been known to have a vivid imagination and most of it makes it to the paper. I think what sets me apart from others is my ability to think outside the box and stay in my own world. When I am doing what I love, nothing else matters. The world is my playing field.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Recently I think the most important thing I’ve learned is to give myself grace. Life is hard. Why make it any tougher by beating yourself up? In life you’re going to hear a thousand no’s but what makes it all worthwhile is being persistent and consistent. Giving it your best and feeling good about it at the end of the day.
