Today we’d like to introduce you to Frozen Productions.
Hi Frozen, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m from Charleston SC and currently living. I’ve been playing keys and drums naturally by ear since the age of three. My father played many instruments, was a part of a soul/funk band and was a church musician and my mother is a singer and choir director therefore I was always around many styles of music. I would go to church, listen to what was being played, come home and play back what I heard on the organ at home. At the age of 13, my father handed over the organist job at the church to me and I’ve been playing Hammond organ at my local church ever since. Around 2004/2005 my neighborhood homeboys brought me around to attempt to make beats for their rap group they had formed. The first piece of production equipment at that time I used was a ZOOM Rhythm Track drum machine. The first time I laid my hands on it, it was like second nature. The first beat I made on it was a remake of Two Way Freak by 3 6 mafia. From that point, the music production journey was born. For a strong 4 years from 2004-2008, I was producing for the local rap group (Drama Posse) that I was now a part of and rapping with. At that point, I acquired the nickname WALLIE FREEZIE which came from a spin off of MANNIE FRESH name, who was the most popular producer at that time. My beats resembled his in that era. The Sound I had was unheard of at the time. I was merging my two environments, Church music and Down south rap music into a new wave.
Life happened, troubles came, and the rap group was divided and eventually I took a ten year break from producing. I felt that if I wasn’t doing it with my friends, I’m not doing it at all. That was a bad decision. I was still playing music at churches so it wasn’t a big deal to me as long as I was playing music. After many requests from artists and peers to get back to producing, in 2018 my wife bought me a midi keyboard and FROZEN PRODUCTIONS was born. From there I created music every day from home and sent out beats to whoever would accept them. Eventually, I started hitting the road and going to ATL to network. I’ve showcased my work in many rooms in ATL. Most of my opportunities came about by participating in an event called IRON FIST COOKUP in ATL. At this event is where I met Dj Hadouken, Dj Burnone, Nuface, Tower4hire, Bugsy Malone and many other producers that I wouldn’t have met sitting at home. These people have taken me under their wings and have guided me along the way. We all are either currently working on projects or planning for future projects. Being connected with them has opened many other opportunities, including this one to share my story.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. Getting back into a production game which is heavily saturated isn’t cake and ice cream. Especially me coming from a hardware background and learning that everything is now mostly done on a computer. It was a learning curve because I didn’t know anything about a DAW. I had to learn how to use Digital software to create my music. I also had to work a little harder to be able to afford these items to get my sound up to par. This part wasn’t too bad. The hardest part for me was figuring out how to get my music to the masses and also creating a sound that stands out from the others. Another hurdle was getting people to check out my music. I didn’t have any email contacts, numbers, or colleagues connected in the industry. No one knew who I was, especially after taking so long of a break. I had to figure out who was a scammer and who was legit to do business with. Everything moved to the web mostly and that was a new playing field for me. I’ve run across people selling fake marketing, fake email lists, fake collaboration opportunities, and fake record deals. All lessons I had to learn from while progressing
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Frozen Productions?
I created the brand Frozen Productions in 2018. The slogan is EVERYTHING FROZEN. Meaning that I seize the energy in the moment/environment and transfer it to music, therefore that moment is frozen into a musical composition. I love creating music based off the current energy in the room or my brain. I specialize in creating melodic soulful melodies and adding trap-type drums over them. Most of the chord progressions come from my church background and the drum patterns mostly come from the dirty south music I’ve listened to over the years. I play by ear so I can almost recreate any song or sample if you give me time to dissect it. That’s one of my strong points. Currently at this point, a lot of producers request my original samples to create too. I listen to all types of music and incorporate it in my sound. With my brand, I feel you can get any genre you desire with a frozen twist and it will not sound like a type beat. WE DON’T DO TYPE BEATS AT FROZEN PRODUCTIONS. I make what feels good. I make what moves emotions. What sets me apart from others is that I look at musical instruments as a box of toys and at any moment I will try to break all the rules to create an element of surprise.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I really don’t believe in good luck or bad luck. I believe life is a journey full of experiences. How you respond to those experiences will set you up for your next experience. I believe the universe will give you what you think about most, what you desire most, and what you put the most energy into (Manifestation). It has to be organic passion and work ethic. I have a vision board with a list of goals that I read every day. I set smaller goals to accomplish the bigger goals. I vision myself in different situations and imagine myself being in it. Somehow the universe has returned answers on how to obtain my goals and it’s been working. Hell, even this interview came out of nowhere. Being interviewed was a part of my vision. It only came from prior experiences that I had to put energy and work to make happen
