Today we’d like to introduce you to Waneka Johnson-Bouyer.
Hi Waneka, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started working with a nonprofit organization in Birmingham, AL that specializes in the reentry of nonviolent ex-offenders. As a career specialist, it was my responsibility to make sure that they are fully prepared to go back into the real world, which meant that they would need some type of resume to start submitting job applications and getting interviews. The problem was that they lacked meaningful job history. Most had only worked while incarcerated. I had to figure out a way to translate those skills learned in prison to the real world to show that they had just as much experience as those who were not incarcerated. For example, if someone worked in the kitchen in prison, I would put that they are employed with the State of Georgia and their position was kitchen help. If they participated in illegal activities, I would mention quality control and logistics as skills that they possess. To my surprise, my clients began retaining employment, and it was their resume that made an impression first.
Because of the success of my clients, I began extending my services to friends and colleagues who were receiving employment as well, and my business was born.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a smooth road ever since. After I transitioned to another nonprofit organization, I was able to still work with the previous nonprofit organization on a contract basis, offering resume services to their youth program. I’ve even had clients overseas.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m currently the Director of Agency Relations at a nonprofit organization in Birmingham, AL. where I oversee LEARN United, a unique program that offers professional development training to local partner agencies at no cost to the agency. These trainings range from how to write grants, how to fundraise, and how to successfully market your organization. We also offer cohorts specializing in middle management and program evaluation. What makes me the most proud is hearing feedback from attendees on how the trainings and sessions have benefited not only their organization but impacted their personal growth as well.
What sets me apart from others is my sense of calmness in the face of change or adversity, and the ability to maneuver and help others maneuver through it as well. Working for nonprofits for most of my professional career, I must always be ready to adapt, whether the outcome favors me or not.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I’ve been blessed to sustain this business in the midst of the current economic climate as well as continue to live my life the way that I want.
