Meet Wi-Moto Nyoka (she/her)

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Wi-Moto Nyoka. Wi-Moto was introduced to us by the brilliant and talented Alicia McCalla.

Wi-Moto, thank you so much for joining us today. We’d love for you to bring our readers up to speed – can you introduce yourself and share your story?
I started as a music theater performer but always loved reading, watching, writing, and telling spooky stories. I saw it as only a fun thing I did on the side and never dreamed that I my arts practice would be horror and sci-fi writing. However, once I started writing and producing, first through music and eventually through mixed media, there was no going back.

Let’s talk about your work and career – what else should we know?
I am the founder of Dusky Projects, producing horror and sci-fi works in audio, immersive theater, and short films for adult and young adult audiences. Our work and services focus on inclusive storytelling and equity through the production and celebration of BIPOC artists.

So, as we mentioned to our audience earlier, you were introduced to us by Alicia McCalla and we really admire them and what they’ve built. For folks who might not be as familiar, can you tell them a bit about your experience with Alicia.
I found Alicia in an incredible anthology called “Slay: Vampire Noire Stories.” Her short story, “The Last Vampire Huntress”, was selected by my story committee for production and aired in our first season of our podcast Black Women Are Scary. I have since produced other stories of Alicia’s, interviewed her for the podcast, discussed her work with other Speculative Fiction professionals, and am a big fan of all that she is doing. From the affirmation project she is launching this year to hold space for positive Black Female representation in the Fantasy genre, to her dope t-shirts that I sport to this day, Alicia’s work gives me something essential; a place in Speculative Fiction where I see myself. Her work in audio storytelling, writing, and visual work is fun, inviting, and inspirational.
