Today we’d like to introduce you to Will Turner.
Will, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
They say that a name is as good as gold, and in the case of The Blaxican, it is true.
When I decided to create my food truck concept of Mexican soul food, I remembered a name a friend of mine from L.A. once called me. The name is a slang word used to describe bi-racial people of Mexican and African American decent. Although it has some shock value, I believe it is the perfect word to describe our culinary style.
Besides cooking, we are very passionate about serving those who are less fortunate. Therefore, through tips we collect on the truck and donations we collect via our site (see donation button), we are able to feed people through various organizations around Atlanta.
This summer we will be opening our restaurant at 5620 Peachtree Industrial Blvd. Peachtree Corners.Until then, you can find us in our Food Truck around Atlanta at MexSoul.com
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a food truck business had many obstacles. Our first hurdle was financing. Since no bank would give me a loan to build a custom food truck I had to use my credit cards to piece together the purchasing of the truck and customizing the truck to a mobile kitchen.
Next major obstacle was the permitting process. Since food truck were relatively new to Atlanta in 2010, the permitting process was ridiculous and archaic.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Blaxican Food Truck – what should we know?
We call it MexSoul Cuisine a fusion of Soulful Food and Mexican Food.
Our Collard Green Quesadillas and Mexy Mac and Cheese along with our Smoked Sausage Tacos are just three examples of our MexSoul Cuisine.
There are plenty of good places to eat in and around Atlanta. The thing that makes us unique is we provide a genuine unpretentious food experience from our name, service, and food, we are what we are and it works. Any restaurant can say they are the best at this or that, we are able to let our customers speak for us and that is what I am most proud of.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Consistency is the cornerstone of our success. Consistent service, food quality and innovation of our menu will help us maintain and grow.
