Today we’d like to introduce you to Xori Amar.
Xori, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve loved music for as long as my memory spans. I grew up in a household that had a large appreciation for music, where my parents listened to a lot of New York hip-hop and R&B, jazz, neo-soul, reggaeton, and West-Indian music. Throughout middle and high school, I participated in chorus and band programs at my school as well as creative writing electives, which encouraged me to begin writing poetry. My passion and ear for music and natural writing ability ultimately led me to start creating my own music in 2015, my senior year in high school.
While at Morehouse, I began to develop my personal sound with an EP series called ‘Honest Hour’, Vol. 1 + Vol. 2 as well as my latest EP, ‘4TH QTR’, and Hourglass’ Valentine’s Day pack, ‘Love Sequence’. With each project, I have been able to sharpen my knowledge and my craft in the process. Through these projects, I was also able to develop a sound for myself that I would describe as a melodic fusion of hip hop and r&b music.
At Morehouse, I had the opportunity to take classes in Black art, jazz, and a music industry class, which was the beginning of me seeking out many different art forms outside of music for my sources of inspiration. Time spent studying abroad in Barcelona exposed me to the creative genius of Spanish painters, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali, who has recently made an impression on my own art as well as music icons Drake, Travis Scott, Big Sean, and Partynextdoor (to name a few). I would also personally say that the importance of “time” has been the biggest influence on my artistic identity through the symbolic use of the hourglass and red rose in many of my art forms.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Challenges that I have faced on my journey in music include writer’s block and early on, building the right team and environment around me that allowed for personal growth and where growth and elevation is fostered in everyone, and not only becomes the expectation but the norm.
Patience is also a challenge – not necessarily in the lack of it but just constantly reminding myself to wait on my time and to continue to put the work in and appreciate all of the wins and lessons along the way. Manifestation Meditation and prayer have been the primary ways that have given me clarity, kept me patient and hopeful about the divine energy working in my favor.
The largest challenge, however, would be financially. Funding a career behind music requires large investment not only in the creation of music, but the business side of things as well. Finding the balance between delivering my artistic vision, yet staying within a budget that doesn’t short cut the vision is always a relevant topic as an indie artist.
Please tell us about Hourglass Management + Entertainment.
In 2017, me and a close friend of mine founded Hourglass Management + Entertainment, a creative talent management company for hip hop and R&B artists that provides artist development, creative support, marketing and promotion, and an avenue for free creative expression. Hourglass lives by the mantra, “take control of your time’ which is meant to inspire our team and our followers to be more time-conscious, take back control over their time, and to put it into their passions and the people/things they love most.
In December 2019, we began to partner with a company called Aera Hope to curate own events around the city that give our artists opportunities to perform, promote their music, and provide an upscale vibe and enjoyable experience that allows for dialogue and interaction between the team and our friends and fans.
I am most proud of the progress that we have made as a company, especially in the last 12 months with the music that has been released and the events that we have thrown. We have grown to be a full team of artists, in-house producers, engineers, strategists and are constantly on the look-out for new talent to join our family. I believe that our philosophy, our music quality, and our collaborative, family-oriented environment provides a safe space for creation where everyone and their ideas are respected and valued.
