Today we’d like to introduce you to Zae Jordan and Javier Williams.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Zae and Javier. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Writers, actors and occasional stand-up comedians, Zae Jordan and Javier Williams, are two Atlanta based cousins who co-create digital content of relatable humor from everyday norm. “We just over exaggerate on situations that you might have done before.” – Zae Jordan
Zae: Back in 2015, I dropped out of Savannah College of Art & Design and ended up doing freelance work as a videographer and video editor. Eventually, I got tired of working on other people’s projects, so I took a break from freelance and started making a bunch of dumb funny videos with my cousin, Javier Williams.
Our first short film project was a documentary parody called “Being Glen: A Puppeteer’s Story”, which was awarded Atlanta’s Best Comedy Short Film in 2016. In the documentary I directed, wrote and played a sock puppeteer, Glen Jones, living with his elderly parents. Javier shot the entire film with a DSLR camera, making it his first time shooting something that didn’t suck. The following year, we made another short film called “Art Sale” – a black & white comedy about two millennial artists trying to sell their ugly art at a yard sale. The film became an unexpected crowd favorite and won ‘Best Short Film’ and ‘Best Ensemble Cast’ at the Houston Comedy Festival.
In 2017, we made a short cartoon called Spooky Dreams and some people from adult swim watched and loved it. Long story short, they hit us up and gave us the opportunity to make some digital content for them. Currently, we have a live stream show on their website (adultswim.com) called “Tato Chat” – a live animated show about a potato and tomato watching internet videos while video chatting.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Javier: Nothing that’s worth chasing never comes easy so it hasn’t been the smoothest. 2016 has been the bumpiest so far, but the fact that we’ve made it this far must mean that something big is coming for the both of us. We knew struggle was real when one night we couldn’t purchase Taco Bell because we were both too broke for value menu tacos. There was another time when we shot a performance for some artists who played a venue at 3am. When the show finished, we expected the manager to pay us upon completion but he did not. Then we spent the next 10 mins convincing a nice older gentlemen to let us out of the parking garage because we didn’t have $30 to pay the ticket. There’s definitely a lot of struggle stories we have, but I’m grateful that we never gave up on our ambitions.
