Today we’d like to introduce you to Zainah Freeman.
Zainah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My mother was diagnosed with leukemia in my junior year of high school. We had to change our entire lifestyle, different food, different skincare and haircare products. We all adjusted to the changes because we wanted to make her comfortable. Once I was in college I was making my own homemade face masks for myself and I found a little passion for it.
When my parents divorced and my mom moved to NJ her cancer returned, this is what pushed me to start selling my face masks and start making more products. I didn’t want to depend on her, I didn’t want to run to her for money, I wanted to be okay and I wanted her to not worry about me. I figured I had all these ideas for a business, I can just go for it and make her proud! The name SEVENTHHEAVEN comes from my Islamic background, I grew up Muslim. In Islam, there are seven levels of heaven, highest being the level where God sits upon his throne and the angels dwell.
Has it been a smooth road?
Juggling 35 hrs a week, ubering on the side, school and a business is a lot but those aren’t even my biggest obstacles. My mother being sick again and in and out the hospital but this time being in another state with my younger siblings makes it hard to stay focused on the bigger picture. All I want is to be by her side and there for the little ones, but I have things to handle down here too, and that makes it hard for me to keep going sometimes.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
SEVENTHHEAVEN is an all-natural skincare company where I take pride in only using natural and organic ingredients in my products. I want to promote healthy skin. I’m known for my Whipped Shea Butter and my Bliss Blends (Aloe Vera and essential oil blends). They’re my best sellers.
My products are different because they’re affordable but still all-natural. A lot of all-natural companies charge an arm and a leg just because they’re rare but I keep my products affordable and still make a profit without being greedy. I focus on what’s good for your skin aside from what smells good for it! Perfumes smell good but are not good for your skin so I refuse to use them!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes! Black-owned business are thriving in Atlanta! I like to call my city the black Hollywood. It’s hard for us to get our foot in the door as entrepreneurs and entertainers in other places because you have to be twice as good, but this city is a powerhouse for young talent and entrepreneurship. I would recommend any company, black-owned or not, to come to Atlanta and get started on their dreams! Only thing we would need to fix is the road quality and the traffic in the city, it’s unbearable!
