Today we’d like to introduce you to Zara Johnson.
Zara, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Back in 2015, I started Black Muslim Singles Society as a way to bridge the gap or Muslim singles looking for marriage. Since then we’ve assisted with marriages, events, and introducing men and women to potential marriage partners with great success.
We care a lot about the state of love and community and try to help a very niche group of individuals meet their relationship goals with ease and support.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The greatest obstacle for sure is marketing. Initially, the challenge was getting the Muslim community we work with adjusted to the idea of matchmaking. It’s more common for Christians, Jewish men, and women, or non-religious men and women seeking love, but still a relatively new business concept in the Muslim community.
After the first two years of opening up minds to the idea and having consistent enrollment, the next challenge was marketing. Learning where to find black Muslim professionals, what they need, and how we can best serve them to meet marriage partners.
It’s a continuous game of learning, tweaking, and adapting. A lot of testing, but it works! We’re very blessed to have the community support we do.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Black Muslim Singles Society story. Tell us more about the business.
When you don’t live in a Muslim Society, you create one! You’ve tried social media, internet matrimonial sites, and even participated in your local singles events. Still, meeting qualified, attractive, partners seems like more of a burden than a fairy-tale?

Why I started BMSS:
After feeling disappointed and frustrated with witnessing men and women constantly struggle with finding a suitable, quality mate, best-selling author, and entrepreneur I decided to take action and use skills I’d put to use introducing friends to lasting partners and fun companions, to benefit the Muslim community. I realized despite the many Muslim matrimonial websites and matchmaking options, none of these services catered to or understood the needs of Black Muslims within the United States.
Since 2015, I have helped hundreds of Black Muslims meet and marry compatible matches, spoken at marriage conferences and events across the country, as well as hosted matrimonial events nationwide. I am passionate about working with truly marriage-minded men and women who are willing to put in the effort to change, be open-minded, and get married.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t like to look at life as luck, but more so that the effort you put out is what you get back. Everything you do is working itself out behind the scenes, and sometimes you get that aha moment or that amazing opportunity that you never suspected, simply by elevating your energy in your business and others gravitating towards you because of it.
It’s amazing how many watch or is drawn to you simply because you show up for yourself. Then when things work out, or what seems to be a chance occurs, you can really be grateful for the blessing.
