Meet Zlatina Mikova of ZIK Taxes LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zlatina Mikova.

Hi Zlatina, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Back in 2011, when my husband and I moved from Bulgaria to the United States, I began working, within my very first month, for a small boutique CPA firm in Chamblee, Georgia. From the beginning, I knew I had found something special.
The firm specialized in nonprofit organizations and served clients across the country. Every day, I had the privilege of hearing two to three success stories about how nonprofits were serving their communities and creating meaningful, positive change in the lives of underprivileged individuals. Those stories left a lasting impression on me.
It didn’t take long for me to realize that helping nonprofits obtain their 501(c)(3) status, create business plans, and prepare tax returns was not enough. I wanted to do more. I wanted to support board members in their decision-making and guide donors in understanding how their charitable contributions could make an impact while also being tax-efficient.
That realization led me to become an IRS Enrolled Agent, earning the privilege of representing taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service and any other state tax authority.
Fifteen years later, after gaining additional experience with a New York–based CPA firm, I was ready to take the next step and start my own practice. To this day, my mission remains the same: to better serve my clients by guiding them, ensuring compliance, and providing the practical tax and accounting support they need to successfully manage their businesses and organizations every day.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like every business, my practice has been a journey. On one side, I’ve learned to be more patient and to truly understand my clients in order to build systems that work for both of us. On the other, the nature of tax work requires thoughtful decisions about which clients and businesses I take on.
My signature is on every tax return, and I stand behind my work and my clients. That responsibility means trust is essential. It’s about getting to know one another, understanding behaviors without judgment, and uncovering the “why” behind a client’s actions.
Some clients ask many questions until they feel confident and comfortable. Others prefer to delegate completely and trust that the work is being done well. Both approaches are valid. What matters most is clear, open communication because communication is everything.

When I founded ZIK Taxes, LLC five years ago, my vision was to create an environment for both myself and my clients that fosters trust, clarity, and growth. Building trust is essential. Whether we are preparing a tax return, reviewing monthly financials, responding to an IRS or state tax notice, or developing a tax-saving strategy, I approach every engagement with integrity, diligence, and care.

At the same time, my work goes beyond compliance. My goal is to uplift my clients, support their ambitions, and help them move closer to their dreams. Watching clients grow their businesses, increase revenue, and pay off debt is what truly fuels me, and at the same time reassures me that this is the right path.

This work requires ongoing education, constant learning, and thoughtful planning. It takes time and dedication, but it is always worth it, because I genuinely care. As I often say, a small shift in operations can lead to significant results. I start each day asking myself not which client I need to work on, but which client I get to help today.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I currently serve on the advisory board of a rugby league that recently relocated from Florida to Georgia, and I’m the communications lead for all 6th-grade classes at my son’s school. I’m deeply involved in my community and always open to trying new things that help me stay aligned, grounded, and committed to a healthy lifestyle.
