Rising Stars: Meet Akeem Dennis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Akeem Dennis.

Hi Akeem, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story begins before I can remember honestly, but my earliest memories started when I was four years old and my late grandpa James Moore always had a polaroid camera in his hands, not knowing until years later how much of a camera ethuisit he actually was. My grandparents were always big on pictures and capturing memories. I took that love of imagery with me I can remember as a child looking out the windows at trees and sky and being able to see things differently than someone else. I remember asking my dad for a camera and he never got one but you know what the say the best camera is the one you have available. So when my children were born I took photos with my phone and started taking pictures more and more. I started working at the airport and taking landscape pictures at the airport and it never got old to me because the sky changes every day.

It wasn’t until I met my Fiance that I felt I could take my work seriously. She told me she believed in me and to prove it she gave me one of the greatest gifts I ever received it was a book with all of the pictures I’ve taken through the years. I began taking small jobs through the years but it was until the start of the pandemic and knowing how fragile life can be did I begin my business Know Me Know Media LLC.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Has it been a smooth road? No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. I started a business in 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic but in 2019 I had a daughter born Aria who spent her whole life in the hospital. It was hard having to constantly be at the hospital through a pandemic when my fiance and I were unable to be in the same room together and support each other through it. Having to always go on different days and through the midst of all of that still find time to learn, create, and perfect my craft. While still supporting and raising my two sons Kameron and Carter. It wasn’t easy at all and having to push through it made me tougher and gave me a purpose. She eventually later passed in 2020. I have so many pictures and memories of her and through that time I thought damn I just have to be a photographer. Throughout the whole process, I was still documenting everything and I feel like I had to accomplish documenting her journey.

Other than that the only other struggle I had was comparing myself to other people. Measuring my talent and success to their own talent and success. I learned quickly that I could only compete with myself and that every opportunity given to a person is because it is meant for them.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have many hats under my media company. I am currently focusing on working with brands from clothing lines to tech companies. I specialize in helping them tell their story. By bringing the products to life and reaching their audience. I’m most proud of my journey. Nobody sees the hard work you do. Sending at least 10 social media messages to people every day, in-state and out-of-state. Sometimes reaching out to people outside of the country. What sets me apart from others is my ability to keep going through tough times. With anything in your life that you’re passionate about, you have to eat, breathe and sleep it! What you doing now will reflect in the future, one of the greatest quotes I’ve ever heard.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Being consistent it may sound cliche because everybody says it, but it’s the truth. If you stay consistent and perfect your craft every day something is going to happen for you.
