Rising Stars: Meet Ako Ayukokata of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ako Ayukokata.

Ako Ayukokata

Hi Ako, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began my community organizing in the 2010’s through an organization I created with some friends. We created local events and attempted to patch up gang violence in our neighborhoods in Clayton County. Eventually I started assisting in my friends local elections while expressing my life to the world through my music.

I have been making beats since I was about 14, and started recording music at around 18. My older brother, platinum writer/artist/producer ForteBowie, influenced a lot of my musical taste and style. We grew up listening to a slew of artists due to our parents music collection.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Ive come across many challenges. Run ins with the law, and financial difficulties plagued early adulthood. Mental health issues nearly resulted in me dropping out of high school, as I was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Through my mental fortitude I defied the odds and made it to college.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an activist & artist. I am known for rocking stages, bending words, crooning melodies and making infectious beats. I battle rap and slaughter in verbal combat. Ive battled on THE STAGE, TRAP HOUSE NY, TBL and SPIT THAT HEAT amongst other leagues. I direct videos and do photoshoots.

I am a first generation Cameroonian.

I am also a school teacher. And have been since 2018.

My father has deep Cameroonian activism ties and my mother is President of a very credible all female Cameroonian non profit dedicated to aiding Cameroonians amidst the Anglophone crisis.

How do you define success?
Success is achieving what you truly want to achieve
