Rising Stars: Meet Alexander Bush of Metro Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexander Bush

Hi Alexander, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in Whittier, California, right on the border of Los Angeles County and Orange County. Growing up, I was very active in community activities within my church and Boy Scout group. My parents always instilled in me the belief that if I wanted to excel at something, I would have to work hard for it. This mentality stayed with me when I started playing football in high school. I kept up my grades and performed well on the field, which earned me multiple scholarships.

After a stint at the University of Wyoming, I returned to California to play junior college football at Cerritos College. There, I received numerous awards and scholarships to some great Division 1 programs. I chose Texas Christian University but found it wasn’t the right fit for me, so I went back to California and began working for Carol Reza, a Women of Worth nominee, at her nonprofit, Bridge of Faith. This organization provides opportunities for women transitioning out of foster care. I coordinated in-kind donations, spent time with the women, worked on projects, and assisted Carol with various tasks.

After two years, another opportunity arose. I received a scholarship to finish my last year of school and football at Rocky Mountain College. During this time, I also worked as a mental health worker at another nonprofit, The Boys and Girls Ranch, while training for football and working on my degree. After completing my education and my last college football season , I moved to Atlanta to continue playing the game I love. I gained the attention of some professional teams before a devastating torn ACL injury occurred.

Thankfully, I connected with a group of amazing people and quickly got back on my feet. By the grace of God, I landed a position at The Book Bank Foundation, where I spearheaded outreach in the Metro Atlanta Area. For a year and a half, I ran food service programs, kids camps, and community outreach initiatives. My past experiences inspired me to start my own business, A-Town Clean & Haul, a moving, pressure washing, and junk removal company.

I love being of service to people, working hard, and being outdoors, so this venture felt like a natural fit. With my background in the nonprofit field, I plan to branch out a nonprofit from my business to help underprivileged families move residences free of charge. Moving can be expensive and extremely stressful, and I believe there is a need for this service in the Atlanta community. What I’ve learned through my many travels is that with determination, faith in God, and hard work, you can achieve your goals. And that’s exactly what I plan on doing.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This journey has been anything but smooth. After my injury, I faced a period of deep uncertainty and doubt. The dream of playing professional football had been my driving force for so long, and suddenly, it felt like everything I had worked for was slipping away. But it was during this challenging time that I discovered my true strength. I leaned heavily on the support of my family and friends, and I took the opportunity to explore new avenues. Working with nonprofits and giving back to the community helped me find a new sense of purpose. It was this shift in perspective that ultimately led me to start my own business, combining my passion for helping others with my entrepreneurial spirit.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m most proud of continuing to push forward through adversity. My parents and loved ones instilled in me the importance of perseverance, and that’s a lesson I carry with me every day. The business I’m currently building, A-Town Clean & Haul, might not seem glamorous, but it’s a crucial stepping stone towards my higher purpose. What sets us apart is not just the quality of our work but the passion we bring to helping others.

My background in community service and nonprofit work has given me a unique perspective. I understand the struggles many families face, and I’m committed to making a difference. That’s why I’m planning to branch out a nonprofit. This isn’t just about running a business; it’s about creating a positive impact in the community.

Also, I’m proud of my ability to turn setbacks into opportunities. Despite the challenges I’ve faced, from injuries to career changes, I’ve always found a way to keep moving forward. This resilience and determination are what I bring to A-Town. We don’t just complete tasks; we strive to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our clients.

In an industry that may seem ordinary, our commitment to service and community sets us apart. Every job we take on is an opportunity to help someone and build a better community. This focus on service, combined with the lessons I’ve learned from my diverse experiences, is what makes our business unique and impactful.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
The most important is Resilience. This has been a cornerstone of my success. Whether it was overcoming injuries in my football career or navigating the challenges of starting a new business, my ability to bounce back and keep pushing forward has been crucial. This resilience allows me to face obstacles head-on and find solutions, no matter how difficult the situation.

Another one is work ethic. The work ethic instilled in me by my parents has played a significant role in my success. From maintaining my grades while excelling in football to managing multiple responsibilities in my nonprofit work, I’ve always known that hard work is key. This dedication and determination drive me to put in the effort needed to achieve my goals and deliver exceptional service through my business.

Next is empathy. Empathy is a quality that has greatly contributed to my success, especially in my community service and nonprofit work. Understanding and connecting with the struggles of others motivates me to create solutions that can make a real difference in their lives. This empathy translates into my business as well, where I strive to provide compassionate and supportive services to my clients.

Last and definitely not least is Adaptability. This has been essential throughout my journey. Moving across the country, shifting career paths, and starting new ventures have all required me to be flexible and open to change. This ability to adapt quickly to new circumstances and find innovative ways to overcome challenges has been a key factor in my success.
