Rising Stars: Meet Amaris of St. Louis, MO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amaris

Hi Amaris, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey as an artist began in church when I was just 4 years old! The creative arts surrounded me pretty often as a child, it was something I was born into being in a family of artists & musicians. I began singing in the churches sunshine band, children’s choir, and eventually moved to solos. Church helped me discover & grow in my passion and love for singing, dancing, and the art of music. Witnessing the power of music always amazed me as a child. From seeing tears being shed, words being shouted, someone jumping up & down.. all from hymns & rhythms being played & sung. I knew immediately at 4 years old that I wanted to impact people in that same way. I’ve always thought it was a superpower to make people feel things from words, sound, and movement. At 21 years old I decided to take a step away from performing solely in church, to singing what my heart has always wanted to sing”Rhythm & Blues”. From this point, jam sessions, open mics, and community events became a second home for me, navigating somewhat of a new territory. Trusting God and stepping out on faith catapulted. me to where I am today.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not been a smooth one as I’ve faced many challenges along the way. After I graduated High School in 2018 life hit a standstill for me. I had to leave Georgia and move back home to St. Louis which was bittersweet. From 2018 to 2022 life was a blur, being in a tumultuous relationship, unexpected health changes, and failed school attempts all took a toll on me. I was lost and was dealing with life in the unhealthiest ways. However, that all turned around for me in 2022 as I took a leap and made the decision to solidly myself as an artist. I’m in a much better place now mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically. Although I’m growing and learning & cultivating healthy tools to deal with life, I still experience challenges in music. I’m learning that there’s a huge shortage of integrity & community in the music industry all around the world and it’s disappointing. It can be discouraging as an artist but what helps me, is holding myself accountable for the energy & actions I put forth in a rooms. Leading with honesty, integrity, and a community based mindset helps weed out what is and is not for me on this journey.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an artist/creatress! It’s always hard to answer the “what do you do” question because there’s so much but all in all I’m a pure artist at heart. I take singing, dancing, writing/composing, performing and create magic with my imagination. I’d say I’m most known for my singing, dancing, songwriting, and performing, which brings me an abundance of joy because I truly love each aspect of the art of music! Including filming as well. I am most proud of my debut EP “Enjoy the Journey”! It’s a 6 song EP written by me, engineered by Drew Mantia, and produced by Dez Niboh (4 tracks), HYDE ESCO (1 track) & DJ Key (1 track). This project is special to me because I proved to myself that I can really do whatever I put my mind to! Believe or not, the idea of creating a project sounded so foreign to me prior to releasing my EP. Listening to other artist I’d have thoughts like “where did this come from!?” but as I just kept experiencing life, one day I just understood. After creating most of the songs the name came to me randomly and my whole soul said yes. That process leading up to releasing my project truly showed me how it important it is to enjoy this journey of life and everything it comes with. I learned it’s about how you view the experiences of life. I’d love some honest feedback on the project! My Instagram is @heyyamaris, feel free to send me a DM! Much gratitude.

I think the only thing that sets me apart is my spirit & faith. I’m wildly optimistic as I believe one can truly have whatever they want for themselves, as long as they simply don’t give up and keep student mentality with life. Everything is teaching us.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Most people wouldn’t know I love animals of all kind and I used to want to also want to be a veterinarian as a little girl!
