Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Blount.
Hi Amy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
In 2017, my husband suffered a brain injury stroke, significantly impacting our lives. Financial difficulties forced me to venture into my first business as an online women’s boutique owner. Unfortunately, in 2020, the business took a nosedive, leading to its closure. I felt disheartened for two years until a chance encounter at a state sale changed everything. As I browsed, my attention was drawn to an unattractive black and silver suit. However, it was adorned with exquisite metallic beads on the upper neck and lower wrists. I purchased the suit and hurried home to carefully remove each bead. Initially, I considered storing them as keepsakes, but I stumbled upon an old box from my previous business that contained a black cow leather belt.
Inspiration struck, and without hesitation, I began detaching the beads from the suit and cleaving them onto the belt. Days later, I was invited to a women’s luncheon event in Delaware, while packing my suitcase I figured it would be the perfect occasion to showcase my new belt design. To my astonishment, the belt received rave reviews at the luncheon, and that’s when I realized my next business venture was right around my waist.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve encountered several challenges in my business journey. I started on a shoestring budget. It felt like a blank sheet of paper, no words. Imagine looking at the ink pen, and the ink is looking at me. With all honesty, it’s tough, but it’s not impossible. Many have started with limited funds and turned their business into a thriving enterprise. Shaking my head, so can I. I’m open to sharing my hardships of lessons that I learned along the way.
First, there is no way around insufficient funds; either you have it or you don’t. Limited capital can cause a delay in inventory, also covering all overhead expenses. Save up before you leap!
Secondly, in your community, all eyes are on you, period. Your competitor, who may be more established is waiting for you to fail. Drink the bitter cup. My advice is to find another community who needs your service or product. Sometimes, it is not good to have the same restaurant on every corner. Run to another location, and don’t look back.
Third, tell your unique story. People will buy into you when you tell us who you are. Craft a compelling brand story that customers can connect with and share, share, and share with others. When people see you on social media, that will feel a sincere connection through a screen device. How about that!
Lastly, word of mouth remains one of the most powerful and enduring forms of marketing. Why? Word of mouth is so effective it has streams of benefits, such as real recommendations from a real person. Positive words build credibility for your brand. Be your own billboard and reap the benefits!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Absolutely, working for the school system can be fulfilling for those who are passionate about the making a difference.
I play a critical role in IEP education system. I work with special needs education students, my dedication, compassion, and resilience has been a true inspiration.
It’s rewarding to celebrate even the smallest achievements and milestones of their students. These victories, no matter how incremental, are significant and motivating for both students and teachers.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
