Rising Stars: Meet Amy Rowan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Rowan.

Amy Rowan

Hi Amy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
One of the first questions I usually get asked when people learn that I am a Clinical Sexologist is, “How did you get into that?” I feel like I was born to do this. As the daughter of an OB-GYN and a psychologist, in middle school, my friends started asking me questions. “Hey Amy, can you ask your dad…..” This sparked my curiosity, and not only did I start learning the answers, but I started learning about women’s bodies and sex and intimacy, long before I was even having it myself.

Fast forward, I’m now a married, stay-at-home mom. I attended a sex toy party and when I learned that I could make a living teaching about sex and intimacy, I immediately dove in. I spent 14 years doing in-home parties for women, teaching about their bodies and how to enhance their pleasure.

But, after many parties, a woman would come up to me sharing that she had never experienced an orgasm, or that she was in a sexless relationship. I knew that selling a product wasn’t the answer to bigger sexual issues. I knew I wanted to help at a deeper level, so I went back to school and became a Board-Certified Clinical Sexologist.

Now I run my practice, Suburban Intimacy, where I provide 1:1 talk-based coaching, courses, and workshops to women and couples who are looking to overcome common intimacy challenges, or who are looking to expand their erotic exploration. I also carry a line of carefully curated intimacy products, designed to help you access and experience deep pleasure.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The progression of my career has made sense, but it hasn’t always been easy. As the full-time primary parent to 3 boys, running my business while running the 3 ring circus that is my life has always been challenging. Like any entrepreneur, my hours can be unpredictable, but I always keep my family first. I had two babies while building my business.

However, the biggest challenge was being diagnosed with stage 0 breast cancer at the age of 38. This brought everything in my life to a grinding halt, as I navigated doctors, surgeries, and the fear and effects of having a double mastectomy. I was lucky that I caught it as early as I did, and didn’t have to undergo chemo or radiation. But I had to slow down on building my business and focus on my health while I healed.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
There are very few places where people and couples can get educated, sex-positive, supportive coaching for an area of life that can be so critical to one’s relationship with their partner, and themselves. I am deeply drawn to the opportunity to help so many people in different ways, whether it is learning the basics to taking things to new heights.

I help my clients overcome challenges such as low or no desire, uneven desire in couples, inability to experience orgasm, painful intercourse, lack of bedroom confidence, body image issues, social and dating skills deficits, aversion to touch, communication conflicts, and more. Through personalized coaching, education, and support, I create a safe, sex-positive, non-judgmental space where individuals can explore their desires, enhance pleasure, and foster intimate connections.

Using a holistic perspective, evaluating mind, emotions, body, behavior, energy, and spirit, or MEBES, I provide evidence-based strategies, practical tools, and compassionate guidance to help my clients overcome challenges, build confidence, and create fulfilling sexual experiences that align with their unique needs and desires.

What sets me apart from many others in the sexuality space is that I’m a mom, in the trenches, raising kids and running my family. I take a very practical approach to how I support my clients. Like so many other busy moms, I’m a taxi driver, scheduler, cook, emotional support, teacher, shopper, and manager of ALL THE THINGS. Add trying to be a good friend, good daughter, good sister, staying healthy and fit, doing something for yourself, drinking enough water…

I understand how it feels to finally settle down for some well-deserved rest, and have your partner reach over hopefully, and feeling DEEPLY… not tonight. It’s a scenario I understand all too well. You want to reclaim that spark, or perhaps just want to want to. But amidst the chaos of everyday life, sex has plummeted to the bottom of your endless to-do list. Believe me, I’ve been there. With three kids and a marriage spanning two decades, I’ve navigated the same challenges—and yet, I’ve maintained an incredible sex life.

Life threw its curveballs, including a double mastectomy at 38, leaving me grappling with uncertainty about my body and intimacy. But, with conscious effort, vulnerability, and a lot of work, I can happily say that we weathered that experience, and our relationship and sex life are light years better than before. I’ve been in the trenches and come out stronger, and happier, with a rock-solid relationship to prove it.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I believe in teaching people fact-based information about their bodies, how they work, how they experience pleasure, how to communicate with others, and how to explore in a safe, enthusiastically consensual way. Silence and misinformation are breeding grounds for shame and guilt, which are the two biggest barriers to pleasure, alone and in relationships.

I dream of a world where sex is viewed as a natural part of human existence, where bodies are welcomed, loved, and embraced in all forms, where communication is easy and natural, and where we lead with curiosity instead of judgment.
