Rising Stars: Meet Ana Boboia & Katie Mcauliffe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ana Boboia & Katie Mcauliffe. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Hott Goss is a fun new project that we are super excited about. Both Katie and Ana have been in the music scene over the years. Ana is a fun-loving and goal-oriented dog mama who is from Portland, OR, last year where she was playing gigs around town from age 16.

She was more recently in an electro-pop duo back in Portland called Shuteye that was recording its first EP right before COVID hit, which ultimately lead to the group’s demise. From then, she worked on a solo project and released an album called “Wish You Well” under the artist name Ana Carmen, which she would best describe as sad-girl folk-pop.

In 2021 she moved to Savannah and was enamored by the vibrant and intimate music scene this little city had to offer. She played a few shows around town but was actively seeking other musicians to collaborate with on a more upbeat project – that’s when she met Katie! Katie is a jack-of-all-instruments spicy little Savannah native who started out on the piano at age 12.

Katie plays guitar and sings in many projects around town, most notably for the well-loved local band called Bugmeat, an indie-rock four-piece. Bugmeat released its first EP late last year called Bug’s Life which can be found on Spotify.

We witnessed each other perform at the Sentient Bean in February where they developed mutual musician crushes on each other and soon after began making drunken plans for a new project of their very own. The name ‘Hott Goss’ was conceived on a Sunday evening in Savoy at our very first official creative session.

Fast forward to today, Hott Goss has four shows and two singles under its belt, and we’re gearing up to record an album in January!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We’ve been incredibly lucky so far on this journey. Our music has been well received in town and we have gotten to play some really fun shows, including opening for Nashville’s well-loved Nordista Freeze and playing a Pride benefit show. One of the biggest challenges Hott Goss currently faces is honing in on our “sound.” We both have very different writing styles and our songs are not quite as cohesive as we’d like. We know this is a common obstacle for new musicians and we are confident we can figure it out along the way!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We are so proud of how Hott Goss is developing! We got really lucky that our talents and strengths are very complementary to one another which has made this project fun and prolific. One thing that sets this project apart from others is that we want it to remain a fully female-driven band. We are currently seeking a female drummer (a hot commodity in Savannah!) but are hopeful we will find the right fit over time.

We are acutely aware of how male-dominated the production side of the music industry is and we want to ultimately be part of the wave of change that breaks that cycle. Historically, we, too, were used to taking the backseat to men when it came to all aspects of the music field: performing, producing, recording, mixing, etc. in music projects. For Hott Goss, we are trying to be a part of more of these processes.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Savannah is special in a lot of ways. It is beautiful, small, and incredibly community-based. You can walk into a local bar and know half the people there, which is such a fun and comforting feeling. Atlanta, on the other hand, is a huge city with so many different pockets. This makes for a much more diverse music scene and all-around culture, which definitely entices us as musicians who eventually want to pick up and take our show on the road. We would love to play shows in Atlanta in the near future, perhaps on a little southeast tour.
