Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna-Claire Cables.
Anna-Claire, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve loved all things art since a little girl, and my first medium was mechanical pencil. I loved sketching Disney characters and soon graduated to acrylic paints in middle school. I was introduced to oil paints in high school, and was blown away with by how many different techniques there were with oil paint! In college, I started posting more of my art on instagram and TikTok and got more and more commissions from peers and a few strangers following my page. Now I balance painting commissions with school and work. My favorite things to paint are landscapes and farm-life inspired art.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Because I’m still only 20 and am busy pursuing my major in college, right now IS ‘along the way,’ and there are definitely struggles! The biggest struggle for me at the moment is learning how to be assertive in my pricing. It is hard to be fair to yourself when you want people to want your art! Since I’m still so young and am not in school for art, it is hard to see myself as a true artist and price my art accordingly.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Currently, I’m studying marketing at the University of Georgia, as well as music composition for film and media. Outside of art, I love to play piano, read, and crochet. I’m still establishing my style and what sets me apart from other artists, but people usually commission me for family portraits and pet portraits. I am most proud of my growth in the past year and my drive to dive into the deep end and push myself. It is all about confidence when you’re first starting out! Having a ‘I think I can’ mindset takes you very far.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
My favorite thing about Atlanta is the constant newness. It is always changing, always growing, and it can be anything you want it to be. You never need to find yourself in the same place twice if you don’t want to. There’s always more places to see and discover, more food to taste, more people to meet.
My least favorite thing about Atlanta is exactly what it lacks; the country. A lot of my art that is not commission work reflects the world as it naturally is, not the city. I am drawn to nature and life’s simplicity, which Atlanta, like any major city, lacks.
