Meet April Graves

Today we’d like to introduce you to April Graves.

Hi April, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
The 2020-2021 school year marks my 21st year as an esteemed educator in the city of Atlanta. I came to Atlanta to attend Spelman College, where I received my degree in Child Development. I have taught grades 1-5 with 4th grade being my favorite.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Naturally, as with any career, teaching comes with its ups and downs. However, I have been blessed to have some amazing mentor teachers along the way to help navigate the tough times. By far one of the toughest times I experienced was when a sweet student of mine passed away during her 5th-grade year. I was her Homeroom teacher in 4th grade and her 5th-grade math teacher.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m known for being a teacher fashionista who proudly maintains a classroom that is fun, firm, and fair. Proud to be named Teacher of the Year in for the 2014-15 school year at Boyd Elementary School (Atlanta Public Schools).

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to always bring my authentic self to the classroom.
