Today we’d like to introduce you to Aqueela Maddox.
Hi Aqueela, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I believe first, to know the value of the story, you need to know the conclusion. Today, I am a speaker and coach with an emphasis on confidence development, financial and relationship enhancement. I help people grow through their own truth using storytelling. Long story short, I tell my own business and share my experiences to help other people become comfortable with their own, so they can get to the freedom and healing they deserve. I believe strongly that “The truth heals” and as mentioned in the Bible, “The truth makes us free.” As I’ve looked over my own life, some of the most constricting moments along my journey have been when I couldn’t share or face my own truth. My inability to share it, wasn’t because I didn’t have the space to. People are more open to hearing your truth even if they disagree, simply because we are vessels…we take things in. Therefore, we always have room to be nosy enough to hear what someone else has going on. One may not like it or be completely opposed to your truth, but hearing it is usually welcomed. With that, my struggle wasn’t having listening ears; it was having the confidence to face my own truth. Side note: I also grew up pretty churchy and very religious. I believe this impacted my ability to share my ugly truths. You know, the stuff you don’t want people to know. The thoughts you don’t think anyone else can relate to. The stuff that makes you look human instead of perfect.
I believe I’ve conquered the fear of sharing my ugly truths. Those are the ones that transform us or make us unique. I used to be overly embarrassed. In many instances, I was very ashamed of some of my choices or seasons. Self-reflecting allowed me to understand and be present with my own discomforts and how they were affecting me physically, mentally and hindering me. This is what I believe God used as leverage for others. I didn’t aspire to coach people. I didn’t have it on my todo’s. I enjoy helping people, but I wasn’t aware that this would be my path. I worked in the corporate space for many years and I usually enjoyed the work I did. I’ve done many things in my life, from artistic to accounting. And because I didn’t have a clear view of what career path I wanted to take, I chose the scenic route. So I’ve passionately worked doing hair, working with children, business taxes and more. For me, I just wanted to enjoy what I did. Well, in one season of my life, I felt strongly that my faith was leading me to coach others in their journey of confidence and relationship. Both require believing in yourself and being aware of self. So my business was birthed…BeLief LLC.
Since then, I’ve also become a licensed Insurance Agent. Losing so many loved ones and feeling the impact of those losses financially, I began to passionately share the effects of not being able to afford to mourn. As a speaker, I set out to share the truths of my journey and help others unveil their truth while navigating their journey as well. Discovering one’s truth and sharing it both takes lots of confidence. So my challenge was to help individuals reinterpret their experiences, especially when it’s only had one perspective or one label their entire life. People come into contact with truths that doesn’t coincide with what they grew up with all the time. Yet the “ah ha” moment that I get to share with my clients and audience is gratifying. I get the privilege of giving people their power back.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
LIFE. Need I say more? Haha! I don’t think anyone is immune to the happenings of life. Take for instance, my mother, one of my number one supporter, passed away just five months after launching my business. One year later, I was burying my sister-in-law. I’ve recently had to lay one of my sisters to rest and my dad. Life has happened. And while these struggles have definitely impacted my “mojo” as I often refer to my energy and motivation, I’m grateful that the passion is still burning inside of me. That flame has somehow managed to maintain its power and light. All in all, these very challenges have also expanded my impact in many instances. Being a coach and speaker, we have the privilege of using our own life experiences to help others. While I have divorced the idea that all of my experiences are for others, I’m aware that they can help others. The experiences I’ve gone through have been extremely valuable to me. I was the primary beneficiary. Everyone else was secondary. That is my revelation. It’s in the overflow of my appreciation and excitement of my revelations that I share with others what I have gone through. In my line of work, business is me. If I’m not doing well, there is no business. That sucks if I’m honest. However, it has caused me to reevaluate how I do business and how to maintain when major events happen. So again, nothing but gratitude for the enhancement and expansion that comes from the challenges I’ve faced.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a Creative. From braiding hair to building decks, laying laminate wood floors, to drawing to teaching/development. I see everything artistically. My lens and brain collaborate to see the beauty or preserve the beauty in many things. As a coach and speaker, the art is my perspective and language. I have a unique way of articulating things. I absolutely love art and see people as art…with that, you can’t always approach people from a linear view.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t really know much about luck if I’m honest. I believe in timing and intention. I believe both take faith and that’s the guide I use to measure and follow. I believe that I’ve been led to make certain moves, and it required me to be intentional to carry out that move and doing it in a timely manner affects what comes next or how difficult I make the next step. If you arrive at the airport in time for your flight, you arrive into your destination at the time you anticipated and carry out the plans of your day as intended. However, if you’re late, and miss the flight, then you have to wait for the next departure, which changes the time of your arrival and all of the events after that will be affected. Some things may be rescheduled and some things cannot be. For instance, some restaurants only serve breakfast through brunch. If you arrive near its closing, you won’t be able to maintain the plan to eat there. You lose out on that option in that day. So for me, faith is the material that makes up why I move with intention and do my best to manage my intentions in time.
