Rising Stars: Meet Aria Dixon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aria Dixon.

Hi Aria, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I took an interest in doing hair at a very young age. I come from a family of women who could do hair and I believe I was born knowing how to plait braid because I don’t remember not knowing how to braid. I do remember have a very distinct memory of teaching myself how to control on my babydoll. Soon after, I would practice on my little brother’s hair and once my mom figured out I could braid foreal she stopped doing his hair. I used to do all the crazy designs on his hair, as I was a very creative child. My family finally discovered it was me doing my brother’s hair and I soon was braiding my entire family’s hair. One day while my cousin and I was walking in the neighborhood, she was stopped on the street because of her braided style I had did.

When my cousin pointed to me and told her I had did it she couldn’t believe it because I was so young. I then started to have adult clients in middle school and up until high school. So I had clientele really young. After I graduated high school, attendees my first year of college and had my oldest son, I had to take a break from doing hair. I essentially took a ten years break before coming back to it. And right before I decided to move to Atlanta is when o decided to go back to doing hair full time, only five years ago. It took me a while to upgrade my techniques to resemble the braids of today. But I taught myself everything. My braids and my creativity sought the attention of celebrities and that’s how I began to do celebrity hair. With My love for hair and wanting to be the best in my craft, I knew that becoming a licensed cosmetologist was the only piece I was missing from being the stylist I truly desired to be. So I was finally in a place to be able to attend hair school. Even though I had some resentment that it took me until after thirty to be able to really pursued a passion and gift that I had since a child, I was grateful that I was able to be taught in Atlanta, the hair capital and by the best stylist and educators, the city has to offer.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I have three sons that I raise on my own in a city far away from my immediate family and support system so it has been extremely challenging trying to be an entrepreneur and mom at the same time. I’m still trying to find the balance in being the best hairstylist and best mother I can be. I take it day by day and try not to overwhelm myself with too many tasks, where it’s hair or housework. It was imperative for me to implement permanent days off to be able to rest my body and my mind. I’ve developed severe anxiety due to this so I’m slowly learning things to do to relieve me of some of this anxiety.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
So I am a licensed hairstylist and I specialize in braids, natural hair and hair extensions. I am most known for my stitch braids. I take my time to be sure that every style is literally perfect, from the parts the symmetry and making sure the braid pattern is super neat. I take pride in my work and literally could not sleep at night if I felt I didn’t do someone’s hair good enough. So I say my passion is what sets me apart from others. I treat everyone’s head as if it is mine and I am very particular and picky when it comes to hair, lol.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is summers at my aunties or grandma’s house with all my cousins. We grew up so tight and was like a big gang of us. It was so much fun being young and being around my family. My family is still very much at the core of me as I’m a big family person.
