Today we’d like to introduce you to Ayanna Melton.
Hi Ayanna, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have always been in to photography since I was 15. I never thought of making it serious until I took my first film photography class my senior year of high school. I really connected with my photography teacher Mrs.Georges and she helped guide me along the way. After graduating I decided that I wanted to have my own photography business, HoneyFocusPhotos was born ! Since then I’ve been building my portfolio and doing photoshoots here and there.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Photography is not an easy business to be in. It can be very competitive and I feel as if you learn something new everytime you do a photoshoot or book a session. Even seeing how others operate their business is a learning experience. My biggest struggle is booking clients and getting my name out there more. I’m still building a website but I have my Instagram account for my photography. Branding is also a struggle for me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I currently work as a drop-in teacher and take care of babies. I’ve given my business cards to many parents and have offered at-home mini sessions for a good price. I am known for being very creative and having great media literacy. I’ve also been told I have a great eye in photography, especially when taking my film photography class. I am most proud of not giving up my passion for photography and continuing to pursue my freelance career.
How do you think about luck?
I’ve had really good luck with having connections for photo shoots and connections for child care. Many opportunities have been given to me within my progression of photography and childcare. I have been lucky enough to make it through four years of college while also working full time.
