Rising Stars: Meet Brea Green

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brea Green.

Hi Brea, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Wow, where do I begin! I have always been interested in makeup and the transformation of beauty. When I was little, my mom told me that I would always watch her put mascara on before work. One day I decided to mimic her but instead of grabbing the mascara, I reached for the superglue and let’s just say my eyelashes had to go that day, but they grew back!

My interest for makeup artistry really sparked in 2010, when I unfortunately got my makeup bag stolen on the last week of my senior year of high school (I still have no idea who took it but thank you to them!). That summer before my freshman year of college, I decided to just start over and really get serious about my artistry. I probably watched over 100 videos that summer trying to recreate looks from Jackie Aina, Jaclyn Hill, and Patrick Starrr just to name a few.

From 2012-2016 during undergrad and graduate school, I did makeup as a side hustle and it was stressful. I’m honestly glad I didn’t give up on my craft/passion. With consistent practice on clients and being open to learning new techniques from other makeup professionals, I’m happy with what I’m able to create today! I have met a lot of great people along the way and it has landed me so many amazing opportunities.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smooth road? Absolutely not! With being self-taught you can sometimes feel as the underdog compare to other artists because you don’t have official training in the field. I remember in 2011 getting my first makeup gig for a music video for an indie artist. My makeup kit wasn’t even acceptable in the makeup world… I didn’t even own concealer. We’ll long story short, I ended doing her makeup the best way I knew how and when she looked into the mirror she was VERY disappointed! She grab my kit and brushes and locked herself in the bathroom. She ended up doing her own makeup while I just sat in the community area and waited until she was done. It’s funny to think about now but it wasn’t at the time. I have had many learning lessons along the way and I’m very grateful for each lesson because I wouldn’t have any relatable stories to tell!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Well, let me officially introduce myself! My name is Brea Green also known as Beat by Burst a traveling freelance makeup artist and beauty influencer in Atlanta, GA. I specialize in natural, glam and SFX makeup. My audience especially loves me during Spooky Season where I am able to really show my artistry and creativity. I’m most proud of taking that leap of faith to becoming a full-time makeup artist but most importantly being confident in my skills. There are ALOT of great makeup artists and this field is very cut throat because people have to like your work in order to get bookings. Also, you can easily get discouraged by all the makeup artistry you see on social media and end of changing your technique and skills and what sets you apart from other artists (trust me, I have been there). Just stay true to yourself, the right people will resonate with your craft!

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I think risk taking is necessary but more so it’s about trusting your intuition and being at peace if things don’t go as smoothly as you think. At the end of the day, just know there is always something better because any rejection is God’s protection. My biggest risk I took was quitting the job I got my degree in and starting a business that nobody saw as a “real” job. It’s important to stand firm and confident in what you believe in because I can honestly say if I wasn’t certain in my decision, I would of probably went back to that “real” job just to please everyone.
