Rising Stars: Meet Brittany Christine of Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Christine

Hi Brittany, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today. You can include as little or as much detail as you’d like.
Hey Atlanta! I started as a background car driver, (similar to being an extra) then was a female lead stand in, followed my a male stand in, (because of my height I could do both) even did child and animal stand in work, (laugh out loud, they had me walking with shoes on my knees for those) which turned into being a sensor suit body double, and certified live action stunt woman, (where I finished all the training for those certifications abroad in my 20s) so I guess you could say I used my physicality and build, to kind of work my way up to being the Actress I am now. I take up a lot of space so failed as a background actor, stuck out too much. At 5’10 1/2 and curvy, I also began booking modeling jobs that had the same niche, needing my sort of screen presence for their stories. The majority of the women in my family are very tall (Men too on my fathers side, my uncle Rob has to duck to get under most doorways to give you an idea) so Casting Directors seem to see me as more of a warrior, viking, commander in chief, etc. I tend to play a lot of, “woman in charge” characters or the total opposite of that, “gentle giant” type roles.

Has it been a smooth road? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
A major struggle I always faced was finances. Paying my college tuition, books, food, housing, clothes, student visas, car expenses, medical etc internationally, was much more expensive than living & studying locally. With the bonus costs of needing a migration agent and immigration attorney things got pricey & seemed to get in the way of new headshots, updated reels, or taking acting classes. I felt behind compared to the other actresses I met who were always able to do some sort of workshop to improve their skills, where as I was spending the majority of my free time working multiple day jobs unrelated to entertainment like cleaning, cooking, nannying, and yard work, because it was cash in hand, so wouldn’t get me in trouble with my work restrictions while studying abroad. I was so thankful for them though, because I got to graduate debt free, with no student loans or interest hanging over my head, as I headed to the entertainment industry back in my own country for my 30s. Not to mention got to be a part of some really cool Aussie, British, Kiwi, & Canadian projects overseas, so I have no regrets!

We’d love to learn more about your work. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I do a bit of everything in film really! I enjoy exploring all the different sides of storytelling and roles that go with them. In my eyes no job is too small or too big, all are important to understand for when I run my own sets one day, so why not get paid for that training rather than pay for film school. (Although I would not be surprised if I still ended up doing that down the track to sharpen skills) Perfect example, I recently got into Assistant Directing, and just completed my first Christian Film called, “Prayers for Satan ” in April. From that I am already scheduled to AD another with the same crew, actors, and filmmakers, called, “Home By The Sea” (although the title may change.)

In each film I also have acting roles, so once my part is wrapped, I then hop back behind the camera with the Director. In PFS I played the supporting role, a Funeral Home Director & the Lead Actress’s best friend, in HBTS I play one of the Leads, a Mob Boss, baddie, think Tony Soprano but female. So I guess what I’m known for is doing it all. There are some things I like doing less than others, but I’m proud that I tried doing them instead of saying no. What sets me apart is willingness to gain any set experience. It helps me become a better performer. Example; what lighting makes me look older and more wrinkly, versus which lenses take away 10 years. I also just did my first boom operator gig and was shocked at how sensitive the mic volumes were! These are things that can be easily changed by the actor having an in depth understanding of what they do and why, so I’m grateful for what these lil one off gigs teach me.

What were you like growing up? Personality wise, interest wise, etc.
I always knew I would be doing something with cameras because my favorite things as a kid were still photography and watching movies. Growing up my entire bedroom in high school was decorated from floor to ceiling with pictures on cork boards and my dvd collection. Taking pics and videos of other people, places, and things, then making weird collages, detailed overflowing scrap books, decorative frames, pottery, and odd ball furniture using the images I took, was my hobby. My personality was always changing depending on the environment I was in, and interest wise, I was always a big fan of DIYing things when it comes to arts and crafts and still am. My latest adventure is making table arrangements for each month of the year. They have flowers, toys, candles, small paintings, pcs of carved wood etc in them. It’s just something fun to do with a movie playing behind me, to de-stress and unwind at the end of a busy day.
