Today we’d like to introduce you to Broly Su.
Hi Broly, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started to doodle at the age of three as one of my hobbies and continue to be productive to this day. I think my passion for art is the main drive for me to become who I am today. The fact that most people around me would tell me to be cautious about my decision to go into art school makes me want to grind harder to show that it is possible to live a life doing what you love to do.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say everything has been smooth. I have dealt with struggles with money, doubt, pressure, and time management. Since I have been spending most of my time working on illustrations and design projects, I don’t get to go out and socialize as much as I would like to compare to the people around me.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Working as a freelance artist, I’m currently finishing my last year of graduate school at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Known for the graffiti-like, bold-lined, and colorful drawing style, I specialize in illustrations, posters, lettering, 2D Animation, and brand identity. There are always projects that I’m working on, whether they are commissioned work or just for personal interest. I get the most fun just by keeping a busy schedule for all my projects and staying creative. I have also been working on my independent streetwear project called DONN Studio, which is the project I’m most proud of, where I get to collaborate with talented artists from all over the world to create merchandise and collectibles. The fact that I’m transitioning my artwork to fabric simply fascinates me and I’m glad that I’m taking the time to make it happen.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Coming to study at the Savannah College of Art and Design is a risk-taking move. First of all, my parents would have never wanted me to study at an art school in the first place because they would rather see me in a university that everyone knows about. Studying illustration is also a risk-taking move because of the amount of tuition I’m paying every year. Not knowing how everything is going to turn out sometimes really troubles me. At the same time, I would tell myself to level up as much while I’m still at school so I’d be better prepared as a professional illustrator and designer.
