Today we’d like to introduce you to Caprice Clarke.
Hi Caprice , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I moved to Atlanta 20 years ago to attend Clark Atlanta University. While there I majored in mass media arts with a concentration in radio/television. Unfortunately, I had to withdraw in my junior year due to a lack of financial aid. I enrolled in Atlanta Broadcast Institute in the summer of 2007. I was fortunate to find a program with the city of Atlanta that covered the tuition 100%. After graduation I secured an internship with V-103 in the promotions department, I would apply radio jobs everywhere for a number of years, but unfortunately, nothing matriculated. I never gave up on my dream, but I did put it on the back burner for a while. Fast-forward to the summer of 2020, while looking on indeed I see an ad for interns for an internet radio station. I applied and was hired with IBNX Radio. While at IBNX Radio, I was given the opportunity to act as program manager, and I also was a co-host for the weekend morning show. After that contract ended, I was referred for another internship with TaShon and Friends of The Male Room. While with The Male Room, I was able to format her show for an easier flow, I was given a segment on the show and was introduced to people that would change my life for the better. After my contract ended with The Male Room, I really didn’t have a plan as to what was next. I woke up one Sunday morning and told myself that I have to go harder for the things I want out of life, I then logged onto Instagram and the first thing I see was a local media company was holding auditions for new talent. I got myself together and went down there and nailed my audition. One of the casting managers was Chelsea Speaks and she knew Tashon from The Male Room, Chelsea started her own internet radio station called 101TKO Radio, and my dreams are now a reality as I am no longer interning but am now the host of my own show Classically Caprice Timeless Conversations.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road definitely hasn’t been easy. There were more than enough opportunities for unpaid internships, but at some point, it’s like enough is enough. When I was applying for actual jobs, I was being told I didn’t have enough experience. I always say no one has experience in anything until you teach them what you want them to know. Then I would get upset when I see the same jobs that I applied for, being given to celebrities who had no training and no experience as well.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a radio host at 101TKO Radio. My show is called Classically Caprice Timeless Conversations. The purpose of my show is to give an updated spin on conversations that have been had in the past and will continue to be a topic of conversation forever. Friends and family have always told me that I have a special something for radio. I love to talk, but most importantly I enjoy being a listening ear and finding solutions.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The main lesson that I have taken away from the Covis-19 crisis, is that life can be shut down without a moment’s notice. The pandemic made me realize that life is too short and if given the opportunity, I need to grab the bull by the horns and make the most out of every second.
