Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlotta Taylor
Carlotta, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey began with the innocence and joy typical of early childhood. However, by the age of five, my life took a tumultuous turn. I found myself navigating the complexities of the foster care system, enduring physical, sexual, psychological, and emotional abuse. These experiences could have easily led me down a path of despair, as is the unfortunate reality for many in similar situations.
Statistically, the odds were stacked against me. Approximately 25% of foster youth do not graduate high school, and only about 3% obtain a college degree. Additionally, nearly 50% face struggles with substance abuse, and 70% of young women become pregnant before the age of 21.
Despite these daunting statistics, I felt a profound, albeit intangible, presence guiding and protecting me through these adversities. While many succumb to the weight of such challenges, I was determined to defy the expectations set before me.
Drawing strength from the gentle resilience of my mother and the charismatic spirit of my father, I chose to focus on the aspects of my story that could propel me forward. This conscious decision to extract positivity from my experiences has been instrumental in my healing journey and has shaped the person I am today.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The path I’ve traversed has been anything but smooth, marked by profound challenges that have shaped my resilience and determination. Enduring physical, sexual, psychological, and emotional abuse during my formative years left deep scars, leading to complex trauma and attachment issues. Such experiences often result in long-term emotional, behavioral, and physical health problems, including anxiety, depression, and difficulties in forming healthy relationships.
Navigating the foster care system presented its own set of obstacles. Frequent relocations disrupted any sense of stability, making it challenging to form lasting connections. Each move not only severed burgeoning friendships but also hindered academic progress, as adapting to new curricula and environments became a recurring struggle. The lack of consistent support systems often left me feeling isolated and misunderstood.
Moreover, the societal stigma associated with being a foster child added an additional layer of adversity. Facing preconceived notions and biases, I often felt the need to prove my worth beyond the label assigned to me. This external skepticism, combined with internal battles of self-worth, created a formidable barrier to pursuing my aspirations.
Despite these challenges, I chose to confront them head-on, drawing strength from my experiences to fuel my ambition. Each hurdle became a lesson in resilience, shaping me into an individual committed to advocating for others facing similar adversities. My journey, though fraught with difficulties, has been a testament to the power of perseverance and the unwavering belief in one’s potential to overcome.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a walking inspiration—a living testament to resilience, transformation, and the power of unwavering determination. For the child who has only ever heard “No,” for the woman who feels trapped by her past, I am the blueprint that proves survival is just the beginning—thriving is the destination. I am the fire that refused to be extinguished, the bloom that rose through concrete, the voice that turns pain into power.
As a keynote speaker, I command stages at corporate events, child welfare conferences, and organizations committed to mental health, entrepreneurship, women’s empowerment, domestic violence prevention, workforce retention, foster care advocacy, and beyond. My words do more than inspire—they ignite change. I don’t just speak; I transform lives.
Beyond the stage, I am the founder of No More Flinching Academy, where I coach aspiring speakers, helping them find their voice and step into their purpose. I also lead The No More Flinching Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering foster youth and aged-out young adults, ensuring they have the resources, mentorship, and support to rewrite their stories.
I am most proud of defying the odds—earning my master’s degree after quitting college eight or nine times, proving to myself and others that failure is never final. I took a leap of faith, moving from Mississippi to Illinois with no safety net, no assistance—just relentless belief in my purpose.
What sets me apart? It’s the anointing and favor that God has placed on my life. My journey isn’t just about personal success—it’s about using my testimony to lift others, to dismantle generational barriers, and to show that even the most shattered beginnings can lead to extraordinary endings.
I don’t just get back up when I fall—I rise higher, stronger, and more determined than ever. And through my work, I ensure others do the same.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I firmly believe in the principle of seek, and you shall find; knock, and the door shall be opened. When the student is truly ready, the right teacher will appear. But mentorship isn’t just about finding someone—it’s about being intentional in choosing the right guide.
A mentor should not only inspire but also align with your values, challenge your growth, and support your journey with integrity. That’s why it’s crucial to do your research, observe their character, and ensure their mentorship is rooted in genuine guidance rather than self-interest. Take your time—there’s no rush. The right mentor won’t just open doors; they’ll empower you to build your own.
When it comes to networking, authenticity is key. Show up as your true self, add value to conversations, and be willing to learn. Opportunities often come not just from who you know, but from who remembers the impact you made.
