Rising Stars: Meet Cherrie Brooks of Decatur

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cherrie Brooks

Hi Cherrie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I vividly recall the first time I stumbled upon a video showcasing Big Muva’s House – a diverse group of women of varying shapes and sizes confidently donning provocative swimwear. It was a moment of awe for me, witnessing such representation in the fashion world. Instantly captivated, I sought out Big Muva’s House on social media and reached out to schedule a photoshoot, eager to be part of this empowering movement.

My desire to bolster my own confidence was the driving force behind my aspiration to inspire younger plus-size women to embrace their beauty. I firmly believe that beauty transcends the narrow confines of conventional standards, and confidence is the beacon that precedes our presence. It’s a quality that resonates in every photograph and interaction, empowering us to set boundaries and stand firm in our convictions.

Understanding the importance of timing has been pivotal in my journey, as I’ve learned to navigate life’s twists and turns with grace and resilience. Additionally, I recognize the significance of diversity and inclusion, both in personal connections and artistic expression. Embracing individuals from diverse backgrounds enriches our narratives and contributes to the vibrant tapestry of fashion and art. As a result of my fashion ambitions, I am currently employed as the Fashion Coordinator at Big Muva’s House, where I play a role in inspiring plus-size women.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey hasn’t necessarily been difficult; for me, the main challenge has been internal. Overcoming my own insecurities has been the greatest obstacle. When wearing lingerie, a woman’s vulnerabilities are exposed to potential criticism from the world, but my toughest critic has been myself. I’ve had to learn to quiet the negative voices within me, allowing myself to step in front of the camera and convey the desired aesthetic with confidence.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am proud of being a Fashion Cooridnator for Big Muva’s House. Apart of being in this role allows me to counsel other young women who may want to become a plus size fashion influencer.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I like best: I love that our city has the best platform for entrepreneurship and fashion. Anyone can move here and change their lives for the best. Being born and raised here I have seen this city progress so much.

What I like least: I HATE the TRAFFIC!! With the city exppereincing so much growth and developement, it has caused quite a bit of congestion when trying to get around to phootshoot and assignments.
