Rising Stars: Meet Chinma Nnebedum

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chinma Nnebedum. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Chinma is a musical artist, singer-songwriter, music producer, audio engineer, film & music video director out of Kalamazoo, Michigan. His love of media started at a young age. As early as age of four years old, he began creating short films with his family camcorder. While developing his love of film, his Nigerian household also developed his love of all genres of music exposing him to afro-beats, reggae and African gospel. At the age of nine, he started producing music after being inspired by artists like Aaliyah, Timbaland, and Daft Punk. Artists who would also serve as his greatest influences. In 2018 he released his first body of work as a producer titled “TAKE ONE”. In 2020 he released his debut album as a producer and artist self-titled “Chinma”.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There’s always been obstacles, even from the beginning. School has always been a challenge. I never was able to focus in class. Also growing up, my family didn’t have to money to get me the equipment that I really needed to create, so I spent a lot of time just getting around macs and computers with just free software. That alone made some of my family members upset that I was spending all this time.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I like to call myself just an all-round creative because I actively do a lot of things. I’m a filmmaker, director, editor, music producer, audio engineer but I’m mainly a musical artist. I’m very proud of this film I had just released on tubi called Conequences. I’m also proud of all the music that I have out to be honest. Everything I put out is great. That leads in to the last point. I can literally to all part of creating, I have the ability to create any and everything. I’m trying to redefine how people view creatives.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love how small and tight-knit Kalamazoo is. It’s very easy to get support, but its also very easy to have hate and some people get stuck in the small city mentality.
