Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Henderson.
Hi Chris, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I first got into photography when I was a kid. It ended up on the back burner as I grew older. It wasn’t until my younger brother’s death that I picked up the camera again, this time for good. It started as an outlet for me, documenting my family and moments with them. After a while, friends began asking me to document their growing families and before I knew it, I was traveling to photograph weddings all over the country.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been smooth. Some of the struggles along the way were self-made. A lot of my personal struggles consist of imposter syndrome, feeling like I don’t belong doing what I do. I’ll put the camera down for a while and pick it back up again. The other struggle is that, for the most part, photography has been a side job to a full-time job. The problem with the full-time job is that it was limiting how much I could grow my photography business and the time that I could put into it. I’m learning to put the focus where it needs to be and keep doing what I love the most, which is being behind the camera.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a wedding, portrait and boudoir photographer based just outside of Atlanta. I love to be a light chaser, always trying to find natural and unique light to photograph in. I’m a hybrid shooter, which means I shoot digital and film. What I’m most proud of is my connection with my subject. Whether it’s a bride, a boudoir client or a family session, I want to connect on a human level with everyone so that I make sure that they feel like I truly value them as human-which I do-rather than a transaction. One of the things I’m most proudest of is the ability to take on hard tasks, whether it’s documenting a friend’s battle with cancer, or a series of sessions for women taking their bodies back after sexual assault, or most recently, a friend after being abused by her boyfriend, as hard as these things are, being trusted to document it with my camera is something that I will never take for granted.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Nobody is as awkward in front of the camera as they think that they might be. Just trust your photographer and you’ll be in good hands.
