Rising Stars: Meet Cindy Tyler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Tyler.

Hi Cindy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hello. My name is Cindy Tyler and I am the CEO of Tylers Treatz LLC. My husband and I started our business in 2020 during the pandemic. I worked at TSA at the airport, and my husband was an entrepreneur for several years running a successful business. Unfortunately, life had its way and completely limited his physical ability to work and run his business as he had been used to for so many years. He was forced to pivot in his entrepreneurial pursuits and decided to start a business that would not require the same intensive physical labor while still stabilizing our family financially. He adapted his father’s pound cake recipe, and together, we turned it into our very own. His family recipe paired with my culinary experience and training from high school and college allowed us to create our 1st cake – our original sour cream pound cake. We officially launched our business, Tyler’s Treatz LLC, by the end of 2020 with just one pound cake flavor, and it was a hit! Our pound cake was selling out each day, and since then, we have added 8 more flavors to our menu – but our original pound cake continues to be one of our best-sellers yet!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It absolutely has not been a smooth road! Do you know how many pound cakes we had to throw away because we messed it up during our test run? 😆 Between failed pound cake testing and baking to price adjustments each year due to inflation and rising costs of ingredients, it has been a challenging and costly journey as business owners. We suffered personal obstacles with my husband’s health and physical condition, making him fully disabled and taking him out of the workforce completely. However, with each obstacle thrown our way, God pulled us through, and we have overcome 10-fold with the success of our Tyler’s Treatz business. My husband utilized his business sense and marketing skills to promote the business. Everyone knew who he was because of his larger than life personality and deep, bold voice and laugh.

On Easter Sunday, our world turned upside down. My husband succumbed to his medical condition and passed away in our home. My new normal introduced me to struggles that I could not even fathom. Yet again, I give praise to God for holding me up with the support of my strong village, who helped me through this transition. By July 2022, I decided to re-open our business and continue my husband’s legacy, our legacy. Tyler’s Treatz began with my husband and I but will continue to live on for years to come – our children will know all that we did to overcome life’s challenges and will learn how to remain resilient through the loss of their dad and my example to carry on with the business and our life. Our shared hope is that our daughters will cherish the work and love we poured into this small business and will grow up to be strong women who can continue to grow this business into greatness!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have worked as a TSA officer at the airport for about 14 years. I love working with people, I’ve always been outgoing which makes a job at the airport always exciting because I am constantly meeting new people. I meet so many people at the airport, and my personality radiates through. If I have to say one sentence about my personality, it would be, “When you meet me, you’re gonna love me.” 😆 When my husband and I became business partners, we were the perfect dream team. Between his entrepreneurial background and my people and culinary skills, we were able to build our business pretty quickly. I believe our business has an instant appeal because not only are our cakes absolutely delicious, but our customers become like family, we sell our cakes and personality. I connect with so many different people wherever I go and instantly, just like that, we have a new customer!

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The Covid-19 crisis introduced a new wave of global health concerns and overall attention to public and individual health and sanitation practices. However, through these changes, we learned that people want to feel good, and cake makes almost everyone happy. We were very aware of customers’ apprehension to personal interactions and their heightened concern for sanitation so we practiced care and cleanliness to assure that our cooking, baking, packaging and delivery process reduced those fears and was sanitary. We individually wrapped our cake slices and were sure to do whatever was necessary to make our customers feel safe and comfortable purchasing our cakes. This extra care in our cleanliness and sanitation made our business successful even during the pandemic.
