Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey Baker.
Hi Corey, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am writing to share a transformative story that embodies the resilience and potential for change within our community.
As a Sumter South Carolina native, my journey from armed bank robber to community mentor and author represents a powerful narrative of redemption that could inspire your viewers.
Personal Journey
My life story began in Sumter’s challenging streets. Having lost both of my parents by age 19, I quickly found myself in a downward spiral en route toward death and destruction. I made choices that led to an armed bank robbery and a dramatic four-hour manhunt spanning eight counties. This lowest point became the foundation for an extraordinary transformation.
The Transformation
During incarceration, I discovered my true purpose through education and self-reflection. Today, I lead Skillsets for Life Consulting LLC, dedicating my life to:
• Mentoring at-risk youth
• Preventing youth crime
• Building community leadership programs
• Sharing hope through speaking engagements
Book Release
My book the Game Changer provides
• Raw insights into life behind bars
• Steps toward personal transformation
• Guidance for youth at crossroads
• Strategies for community engagement
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Of course it has not been a smooth road some of the struggles along the way came as I was initially released in 2009 with a marketing management degree small business manager, computer, fundamentals, retail department manager, as well as a load of other courses that I’ve completed however with having those college credits in a two year diploma from Altamont heart technical college I look forward to being in an advanced position given my circumstances however, upon my release, I quickly came to the reality that although I was released with a college degree, I was still now in competition with those who had a college degree but no criminal background so I found myself having doors closed in my face opportunities denied that I know I was qualified for so even after 10 years in prison and educating myself, I return back into society to continue to be punished and denied a fair chance based on my past, this ultimately way to my recidivism as I resulted back to criminal behavior in order to advance myself in society, and after being convicted in serving a second term of 15 months, I came home and soon recommitted myself to staying on track, moving forward and defying the odds, no matter what it took and I have been home now for over 10 years free of any new charges so in closing yes it was hard but I ultimately had to make the decision to stay on the straight and narrow, and no matter how hard it got to not go back to a criminal lifestyle

How do you think about luck?
I don’t believe in luck. I believe in choices. Cause and effects and divine alignment.
