Rising Stars: Meet Daniel Edwards

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Edwards.

Hi Daniel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m an Orlando, FL native who relocated to the Metro-Atlanta area in 2018.

Being a psychologist was my ‘what I want to be when I grow up’ job and with a Bachelor’s in Sport-Management and a Master’s degree in Sport-Exercise Psychology, I thought I was on my way.

My journey into the field took a winding road through teaching Physical Education & Health to K-12th graders, coaching golf and track and working for an insurance company adjudicating disability claims.

My passion for mental health was reignited while working with a lot of behavioral health insurance claims. I went back to school and obtained a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and now, here I am – assisting individuals and relationships across Georgia & Florida.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I consider myself a lifelong learner and I love school, but going back to graduate school to obtain a second master’s degree was tough. During my program, I was required to complete a practicum and an internship which meant I stopped working for a full year. Being an older – nontraditional age student – an individual responsible for a household and bills made the idea of this quite nerve-racking, but I jumped into it. I’m glad that I did and I feel like I can encourage others to follow their dreams as well.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a mental health clinician at Modern Path Counseling – as a team, we are committed to working with individuals who are gender, sexual or relationship structure minorities. I work primarily with teens & young adults who are facing anxiety, depression, stress and/or trauma related to gender, race and/or religion. Due to my background in sports I really love working with athletes and former athletes too.

I am proud that I can provide representation as a Black man and work within the LGBTQ+ community. I love that I can provide the ability for potential clients to have the opportunity to work with a professional who is more than just an ally, but a member of the community also.

What are your plans for the future?
Becoming licensed in Florida & Georgia are top priorities. I’m also taking the steps to become an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist in the next couple of years. While doing so I will continue to sharpen my skills in gender and trauma issues. My ultimate goal is to normalize the conversation surrounding seeking mental health assistance within the Black & LGBTQ+ communities.
