Today we’d like to introduce you to Dasom Choi
Hi Dasom, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
There is no particular reason to start art. I found what I wanted to do and challenged myself to the best of my ability, and now I have myself as an artist.
I came to the United States as an international student. I did not know much about Atlanta before I came to Atlanta to study. But now it is the city where I grew up, changed, and spent the most passionate time. When I first came to Atlanta, I was an international student who transferred to the graphic design major. I majored in graphic design because it is easy to get a good job, and others recommended it. But the more I studied, the more I didn’t lose my desire for fine art. After thinking about it for a year, I changed my major to fine art with the idea of not leaving a moment to regret the most before I die. This was a big deal for me. While studying fine art with an uncertain future, I never expected what I would be like, but what I wanted was more important than a stable job, and I chose it. I can not forget when I was in the elevator crying after consulting with my advisor when I changed majors.
While studying painting majors, I learned that art is not just creation but connects with society also. I realized that to understand modern society, I also had to study media, so I chose motion media as my second major. Finally, I decided on Sculpture as a minor because I didn’t want to limit my art to 2D. That’s why I have a unique history, with a minor in Sculpture and a double major in painting and motion media. In this unusual situation, I was studying at school; friends asked me if I could sleep. (They even asked me if I had a magic tool that controls my time.)
My career began when I was elected to the summer competition in my third year of university and held my first solo exhibition in Seoul. Thus, it led to a few individual and group exhibitions, and recently, I have successfully conducted an international exhibition as a curator myself. I am studying my last school schedule until graduation in June at my current school. And I am preparing for another challenge.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Why does art attract me so much? Why does art make me move forward, despair, and return to my feet? I haven’t found an answer to this question yet, but I’m learning a lot. Art has a language, and any artist has that language. And with that art language, I communicate with society and create again. In this process, I grow as an artist and find myself. I think this is the heaven and hell of the art. As a creator, the feeling of wanting to be recognized for my creation, the problem of reality, and the sense of happiness when holding a brush are mixed. And as I make a work of art, I go down to the deep inside of me. It feels like I’m driving a ship called ‘I’ and navigating over the endless ocean with a vast horizon, and sometimes it sinks into the deep sea. It’s so hard for me, but I can’t quit. I can’t stop because I know how I feel when I see the finished work and communicate with my art language when it’s finished.
Therefore, the more I study, the more I feel lacking. Anyone can create, but one’s art language can be found only by getting to know oneself and learning where I live now. Art Language is for recording and communication; if you were in a world by yourself, you would not develop. My art language has just begun. Therefore, I have no choice but to continue studying materials, reading books, having experiences, and creating.
Still, I am grateful that I could enter the massive line of human cultural heritage called art. I want to study hard and add my legacy to the legacy handed over by my predecessors and handed over to future generations.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The biggest quirk of my art is the combination and atmosphere.
As an interdisciplinary artist, I choose the best way to express my chosen topic by combining various materials and fields such as painting, sculpture, installation, and media. I continue experimenting, challenging, and constantly working on samples to do this. The atmosphere created by this unexpected combination is unique. For example, I am currently producing a mixture of oil and mother-of-pearl. I have studied the history and techniques of mother-of-pearl, mixing them with oil painting to proceed with sampling, and now I am producing large-scale works. The classic atmosphere of oil painting and mother-of-pearl’s colorful and dreamlike atmosphere are mixed to create a new feeling.
Apart from these things, I want people to listen to the art language I speak in my work and find something about themselves rather than expect my work. I want to be a remembered artist rather than an anticipated artist
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
The best resources are to go and walk around in person to galleries and museums. Go on a trip and gain experience. If it is difficult, go outside your house for a walk and look around the world next to you. Even the smallest things can be an opportunity to change me.
