Today we’d like to introduce you to Deborah Calabro.
Hi Deborah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have been a kindergarten teacher for 30 years. I love teaching and helping others, its my love language. When I became a mom, I would have friends reach out, how did I do things and take my son places. I would text them all the info about how to visit a place and more started asking so I started a private Facebook page to give the details. Friends started asking others to join and soon my page was born.
I post fun places on my social media page Debbie Discovers Atlanta and Beyond where I take my son and then gives tips about the place like discounts, local places to dine near by and other areas of interest.
I love being able to explore, spend time with my friends and family and letting others know about cool places.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The hardest struggle has been time. Teaching kindergarten full time, being a mom of a son who plays football and baseball and getting him to all his sports. while still trying to explore, post and edit reels.
I wish there was more time in the day to do it all!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Two years ago I went to an amazing social media conference in Nashville. When I got home that night at 11:50 pm a friend had texted and told me about NASA Social where you get to go behind the scenes and see a rocket launch from the media area and learn all about NASA to take back to your followers.
I have always loved space and this would be a dream come true! I had 10 minutes to fill it out as it was due at midnight. I quickly filled out all the essays and sadly found out a few weeks later I didn’t get it.
Fast forward to this year, I applied again and got wait listed. I wasn’t giving up and applied again and I got it. I think I was in shock when I got the email! I had wished for this for 2 years and it finally came true! I was going behind the scenes at NASA!
I arrived at Cape Canaveral, Florida where a group of us got to spend 3 days going behind the scenes, interviewing and learning all about Space X 8 crew and launch, We got to meet real astronauts and I ended up seeing 2 launches that week. It is definitely a top 5 moment for me! I loved coming back and showing my kindergarten students what I saw and learned. It was also a great lesson of never giving up and keep trying, you might just get what you want, even if it takes 2 years.
What matters most to you?
Making people happy is what I love to do, Sharing places and have followers message me how they never would have gone somewhere if I had not posted about it is the biggest compliment..
Life is so short and we need to enjoy life and all around us. We all need to help each other and help make this world a better place!
You never know what someone else is going through so always be nice and support each other!
Many would be surprised to know that during a routine surgery my spine collapsed and my life collapsed with it. There is so much I can’t do, but I try to focus on what I can and hope it encourages others to never let anything stop you from your dreams!
