Today we’d like to introduce you to Dee Divakaran.
Hi Dee, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey leading to the world of motion design has been an exciting and evolving adventure. It all began during my early college years when I developed a deep fascination for design and visual storytelling. I started honing my design and animation skills in the process and found myself captivated by the ability to bring ideas to life through motion graphics.
After completing my education in animation, I embarked on a new journey into the world of visual effects, which challenged my technical skills and problem-solving ability. During this time, I gained invaluable experience in various aspects regarding the discipline of 3D design and procedural techniques.
One of the pivotal moments in my career journey was at the beginning of the pandemic. This is when I took on the risk of changing my path for a third time and landed in motion design. In the process, I was able to find a community where I felt like I truly belonged, and my multidisciplinary background was seen as more of an advantage. I still had a lot to explore and learn about myself as an artist and felt like my career journey has only begun, yet I was excited to jump right into the process.
Throughout my journey, I have always been committed to continuous learning and staying up to date with industry trends and technological advancements. This is why I decided to enroll in a graduate-level Motion Media Design program at Savannah College of Art and Design. Additionally, I have attended workshops, conferences, and online courses to expand my knowledge and skillsets.
Today, I am proud to say that I have built a career path leading to me doing what I love: crafting compelling visual narratives through motion design. I am passionate about pushing the boundaries of creativity, embracing new technologies, and exploring the ever-expanding possibilities within this dynamic field.
Looking ahead, I am excited to continue evolving as a motion designer, taking on new challenges, and creating meaningful experiences through design and animation. I believe that the world of motion design has endless potential, and I am eager to see where this journey will take me next.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My creative career journey has been a difficult yet rewarding one so far. I have faced several difficult and interesting challenges along the way. But this didn’t stop me from having a little fun with the process of tackling these challenges head-on. At the beginning of my journey, I had to ask a lot of difficult questions and make even harder decisions along the way. I have had to be patient with myself, giving myself enough time and trusting my creative process in order to move forward in my career journey.
One of the main challenges I faced was not knowing where I truly belonged in this diverse field and community of motion design. Coming from a multidisciplinary background, I had to explore my wide range of skill sets and make an effort to understand what my strengths and strong interests were. I had to then focus on learning and honing specific skill sets. It has been a difficult yet fun journey so far, and I hope to continue growing through my future endeavors.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I would love to share more about my work as a Motion Designer and CG Generalist. In my career journey so far, I have honed my skills in creating visually captivating and impactful designs based on dynamic visual storytelling principles. I specialize in art directing and designing visual elements in order to bring ideas and concepts to life.
One of my key areas of specialization under 3D is look development, which consists of 3D modeling, texturing, and lighting. And in 2D, I specialize in illustration and design. Coming from a multidisciplinary background of 2D animation, illustration, visual effects, and motion design has helped me expand my knowledge regarding the motion design field and allowed me to contribute to a collaborative environment in more ways than one.
Recently, I had the privilege of working with NASA through a program at my college called SCADpro. I am very proud to have been a part of this team and having contributed to a project focused on spreading awareness about NASA’s ICESat-2 mission. Being a part of this project gave me the opportunity to learn, grow and become more confident in my skills and ability. And as a science nerd, this was a dream come true!
I feel what sets me apart from others in the field is my multidisciplinary background and the many unique projects I was fortunate enough to work on. I have also committed myself to actively exploring emerging tools and techniques to push the boundaries of creativity. Additionally, my background has provided me with a unique perspective that allows me to approach projects with a fresh and innovative mindset.
In essence, I’m a motion designer who thrives on crafting memorable visual experiences that is based on research and understanding of the message I am trying to convey through my designs. I hope to continue dedicating my time and effort in learning and growing in order for me to be an active and contributing member of this dynamic and ever-evolving field.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The motion design field is experiencing a remarkable evolution, driven by advancements in technology, changing consumer preferences, and the ever-growing demand for visual content. From my perspective, the current industry outlook for motion design is incredibly promising and exciting. Over the past few years, there has been a growing demand for motion design across various sectors, including entertainment, advertising, technology, and even education.
I think a key factor driving this demand is the shift towards the consumption of digital content. With the rise of online video platforms, social media, and even start-ups and businesses, they increasingly rely on motion design to captivate the audiences in order to convey complex messages in a visually engaging manner. I believe this trend is likely to continue and even accelerate over time in the coming years.
Furthermore, motion design is not limited to traditional media anymore. It’s expanding into emerging technologies like augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), offering new avenues for creativity and innovation. As these technologies become more mainstream, motion designers will play a crucial role in shaping user experiences and storytelling within these immersive environments.
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the adoption of remote work and digital communication. Motion design has proven to be an effective tool for creating engaging virtual content, making it a valuable skill in the post-pandemic world as well.
In the coming years, I anticipate that motion design will continue to evolve, adapt to emerging technologies, and shift the market dynamics. It’s essential for professionals in this field to stay updated on industry trends, continuously develop their skills, and embrace creativity and innovation to thrive in this dynamic landscape.
Overall, I am very excited about the future of motion design and believe it will remain an influential field, offering plenty of opportunities for creative professionals to make a significant impact in this world.
