Rising Stars: Meet Dejá Gibson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dejá Gibson.

Hi Dejá, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hello! My name is Dejá Gibson and I’m a 19 year old professional makeup artist and beauty influencer from South Atlanta. I started practicing makeup in April 2020 during quarantine and gradually grew a passion for it. I was heavily inspired by different beauty influencers on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram and started recreating looks I’d see until I eventually started to create looks of my own. At the time of when I first started, I was only practicing eye makeup since I find it fun to wear vivid and versatile colors in my day-to-day. I didn’t have many other people in my social circle at the time that wore bright and fun eye makeup so I decided to make myself one of the first and dedicated myself to creating and wearing different eye makeup looks every day. As time passed, I grew to be known in my community for my eye makeup and was eventually inspired to share my passion and versatility with the world through social media. I started my journey as a content creator in October 2021 on TikTok and soon started to make beauty content on Instagram in April 2022. Since then, I’ve grown my techniques and specializations into not only editorial eye makeup but also fantasy and fashion makeup as well. In February 2023, I decided to enroll in a makeup academy and started my training toward becoming and state-certified professional makeup artist. I’ve recently obtained my certification from Gwynnis Mosby Makeup Artist Training Center and currently work as a freelance MUA, along with continuing my journey on social media as a beauty influencer.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey so far has had some challenges in the real world as well as the world of social media. In the beginning of my journey as a content creator, the lack of outreach in comparison to the efforts I was putting in would tend to discourage me and sometimes lead me to burnout. I would sometimes find myself with no effort to make content since it felt as though there weren’t many viewers really there to acknowledge what I’d create. In the real world, as a person in my late teens, I found it challenging to encourage myself that I’m doing the right thing of not following the traditional route of life unlike a lot of people in my age group. Despite the doubts I’ve dealt with, I’ve managed to continuously work towards my aspirations with the encouragement and support of family and loved ones. I’ve grown to build larger platforms of supporters on social media and in real life and I’m honestly happy with the decisions I’ve made.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a professional makeup artist with specializations in editorial eye makeup, fantasy, and fashion makeup. I’ve been most known for my versatility and boldness with color & design as a freelance MUA and as a beauty influencer. I’m most proud of how I’ve come this far with my video content and how much I’ve experimented with many art styles of makeup to grow my techniques and expertise as an artist. I definitely believe that my vivid use of color and my specializations as an artist are what set me apart from others, as I am also working towards one of my biggest goals of specializing in SFX makeup.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I definitely appreciate all of the interactive support that I can get on my social media content platforms as well as my growth of personal bookings with clients. I’d love to work with and collaborate with other artists through social media with photo and video content. I admire contributing to the results of projects where more than one expression of art is being showcased. Working with teams of models, photographers, designers, creative directors, and other MUAs really helps me to grow my experience and portfolio as an artist.
