Rising Stars: Meet Don Juan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Don Juan.

Hi Don, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I got expelled from Woodward Academy in 11th grade. I could’ve been a straight A student and thrived, but I don’t take kindly to authority & I like to put my passion towards things I really love. I always wanted to rap or make music but I was never truly confident. My favorite rappers growing up were Jay Z, Kanye West, Chance The Rapper, TI, etc… but my idols are Sickboyrari & Bootychaaain. They’re my everything when I look for an inspiration, like my dream career, dream fanbase, dream aesthetic, I look to them. I wish I started making music before I started going to Georgia Perimeter / Georgia State on Panthersville. I actually started shooting videos and was film director for a while before I built up the confidence to make music. Inspirations are Future, Young Thug, Sickboyrari & Bootychaaain.

When I got expelled, I spent that summer in the Valley (SF Valley) and I really almost didn’t come home. Since I had been homeschooled for so long and got expelled only after a year and a half at Woodward, this summer in the Valley was like one I never had before. I had a real childhood that summer. Like for a senior in high school I mean. It was the last summer before my senior year but the first one where I could just be me and grow, and make mistakes and take in some culture. I made lifelong friends that summer. I always wanted to come back after that. After I decided to take an extended hiatus from Georgia State, I moved to California on Jan. 3rd, 2020… I came back for the pandemic, and I had a personal experience with my brother and my soon to be wife, where my wife introduced me to god. I saw god thru her, she’s a psychic medium. No one could ever convince me of the contrary. She’s the only woman good worth of me.

After that, I moved back to LA in June 2020 after my mom’s birthday… I haven’t looked back since.

Now, after 2.5 years of building, I’ve started recording my album.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Learning discipline, being confident in myself & my plan. Gaining clarity & wisdom and just having faith in the universe.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Ima musician. I have gotten to a point where I know my music is hard, and no one can tell me otherwise. I’m an artist. When people hear my music and feel my presence, they know ima threat. I’m inspirational.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Sometimes I have a hard time speaking about my emotions, but I’m very genuine in my songs. I’m very expressive with my art but I don’t always have the easiest time speaking on my emotions or even analyzing them myself.
